Other than weight, are there any pros/cons between aluminum, stainless steel and steel, which I would need to consider for a .308 target rifle’s 1-piece scope mount?
For years wood was the state of the art when it came to stocks but it was found that they expand and contract with the temperature and humidity and will change your point of impact so now synthetic stocks are the norm because they are more stable. The rise and fall of temperature of your steel receiver and base will contract and expand at close to the same rate witch is a more stable platform for your optics.7075 aluminum is a awesome alloy but will have a different coefficient of expansion than 4140 cm or 416 ss both standard steels for the production of bolt guns I use heat treated bases and rings for all of the long range rifles I have built with excelent results.Either will work well if installed corectly.
