I'm wanting to build a 300 Norma, but I'm pretty inexperienced as far as this cartridge goes. I had a 6.5 PRC build two years ago and I absolutely loved it, till I sold it to a buddy of mine. Since then, I've been longing to do another bolt action build and have settled on 300 Norma for many reasons.

My question is this. Is this setup OK to run in a chassis setup? I liked the KRG Whiskey that my PRC was in and wouldn't mind going that route, but is there another that would fit better? Also, I've decided 28" 1-9 for twist. I'd mainly be doing 215-230 grains out of this build.

I'll admit I'm a young noob on this stuff so any guidance helps

Yes you can put 300NM in a chassis. How far are you wanting to shoot?

Yes you can go beyond 1,400 for sure with 300NM. You can drop the Norma into any quality stock/chassis that normal/magnum cartridges will take, pick your favorite flavor. I've taken a 6.5 creedmoor to 1,500. If you have the range, and you are set up to reload, the 300 Norma is a cool cartridge. If you aren't reloading I wouldn't touch it and would instead look at maybe a 300PRC or 300WinMag. The 300NM match factory ammo is going for $5-6/rd right now.

Also, I've decided 28" 1-9 for twist. I'd mainly be doing 215-230 grains out of this build.
You want a 1:8 twist for the 208 LR and 220 LR Berger Bullets, I know since I shoot them in my 300WM 24 inch, and they are tack drivers at 1800 yards and that are also a newer design then the 215's and 230's. It will also work well with the 215 HT and 230 HT bullets as well.

I've pushed to 1400, so I'd like to go farther. I hear 300 NM can fit that bill
Yes, it will and further (3K+) if you can find a place that will let you and a scope and base that has the adjustment for it.

One of my next builds will be a norma 300 as well with an ARC CDG action.

The 245 berger calls for a 9 twist, no way I would go 8 shooting cup and core bullets.

Yes, it can definitely go in a chassis.

This place sure is evolved. All the way to post #8 and not a single AI recommendation yet.

At 1400 yds ya don't need a 300 NM, a 308 or 6.5 CM can do that especially for non competition work, and a lot less cost.
Nothing wrong with the 300NM I have considered building one myself...I use 8 and 9 twist on 308 rifles so I can shoot 200 to 250 gr bullets...it a small case so long barrels and throated chambers, with a long action helps improve the capacity. I have a 300 RUM and 300WM...but no 300 NM. The 300 WM is a factory 10 twist in a chassis, it shoots 230 SMK at 2962 fps and stability is good at 100 but it will lose LR BC ...the manufacturer says an 8 twist is optimal, some go with 9 twist...but I'll build on an 8 twist, 28 to 30" barrels bring out more free velocity than the 24 to 26." A 30 to 32" if ya go really long...Remember the Australian shooting couple took a stock Rem 700 308 win barreled action 26" out of the stock onto a chassis, shooting 200.2 gr Bergers and made 2 hits of 10 shots on a 24" steel plate at 3000 yds. just for reference the a big magnum is not needed, but desired in competition for an edge over the competition. Practice and good shooting techniques are more important...in 1879 the US government took the 45-70 to 3500 yds, effective at 2500 yds and proclaimed the average trooper could engage targets to 1900 yds, with the calibrated ladder iron sights.
