Here is what a 30cal 168gr Amax did to my elk last year. Took a few steps backwards. Add your Amax hunting pic results if you would like.

Nice shooting, I have never thought of shooting a tree and letting it drop on his head.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Here is a pig I shot a couple of months ago with a 178gr Amax out of a KMW 308. The Les Baer is there for a reference, oh and I did shot it there in the neck to see what the 230gr HP would do.

That looks like a real fun time after the trigger work was done.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

I thought I'd try the 178g Amax out of my 308 this year to see how they did. Well i ended up punching two does and the bullet did a great job and putting them down, but the exit hole was about the size of my fist. Shots were right at the 200yd range, not to far. I still have one more to get so i'll try and pick it up at a further distance. I'll also get pics up when i get a chance.

My first shot at game with this rifle, sort of nice.

Yes it was a DRT hit.

You Sir, SUCK. I wish our misguided GOV would let use hunt with Suppressors.

Nice looking rifle and animal.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Here's a video from 2 years ago I shot with a 208 A-max out of the TRG 300 WM. It was a bang - flop. I LOVE the A-max as a hunting bullet.

Hehe, it´s not a supressor it´s a moderator, potato/potato thing, most legal here, a question of sound pollution and protection of shooters hearing,

we used to have a ban on them, misslead gov thought that only poachers would have them/use them,

in real life they are great things for close to houses hunting and lowlight hunting, muzzle flash will kill your night sight, but with a "moderator" not so much or at all.

As a last bonus, I can spot my own hits as they land at 300 meters and beyond and I am not loosing target as much as before.

Best regards Chris

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

After hunting many years with match projectiles, I worked up a load for my .308 with the 208 Amax. My annual trek to the Upper Cumberland Valley is in one week and I hope to have some reference pictures to post here. All the success with the Amax as a game getter sold me.... That and the 208 grouped fantastically during my load development.

Looking forward to pictures, the 208 is a beast. Can't wait to see the outcome with the 308 pushing it. Good luck man.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Is the AMAX that your using the same bullet used in Hornady's TAP ammunition ? My understading was that this type of bullet (along with BTHP ) really weren't as desireable as they were too frangible and destroyed too much meat and might have issues with getting deep into larger game with thicker skin, muscle, bones , etc..

Curious as I've been wondering how this AR-10 I bought might be used for hunting. I bought some of the Hornady TAP in 168 and 155 grain and been trying to learn if I need to get a different bullet for game.

I was reading a thread earlier that was a post by a hunting guide who was lamenting his error of not checking a customers equipment and had lost a large pig after 2 hits with I believe - 168 grain TAP.308 .

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Its all about shot placement. A number of successful guides on here have been shooting match bullets at game and having great results. If you send a solid bullet through the shoulder bone of an elk lets say, you will still loose tons of meat. Its just the way it works. Also as far as pigs go, Its all about the head shots.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

7wsm and 162 amax. Every animal I have taken with them has been a bang flop. I did allow two people to shoot a cow elk with my rifle last year in Wyoming. The first was 675 yards, quartering to just slightly. The shot entered right on the point of the shoulder and she made it about 10 steps before going down. The next day another cow was taken at 800. I watched in the spoting scope as 3 shots seemed to go into the same hole in her rib cage before she went down. I dont know how I feel about it for long range work on animals larger than deer after that experiece. I now have a load with 168 bergers for when I finally draw a Wyoming Area 7 bull tag.

Two of my critters from last year. Oklahoma whitetail and Wyoming antelope.

Im going to load some 139 Hornady SST and try them at hopefully around 3000. Acording to my ballistic program they should shoot a bit flatter all the way out. The .486 BC vs the .625 of the 162 doesnt seem to be enough to matter with a little addition speed. Hopefull get to try them on a Whitetail this weekend

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Here are pics of a small muley and recovered Amax that I took on the last day of my hunt with my son in Montana. One shot at 505 yards through the right shoulder. The round grazed the leg bone, penetrated the scapula, completely destroyed the boiler room, passed through the opposite side scapula, and barely broke the opposite side hide. I cleaned the bullet up this afternoon, but I haven't had it on the scale yet.

7mm WSM
162 Gr. Amax
3040 FPS at sea level
I doped him right at 6.5 MOA up and the shot was right on the money.

I was going to say when the elk fell he knocked down the tree.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

here are a few pics of a doe that i'd shot with the 178g A-max out of my 308win at 175yds. It did some damage. She ran about 30yds and did the dizzy flop.

Exit hole

Hemoraged pretty bad.

Then I picked up one big doe at 400 and the my father picked one up at 433 with my gun and they were basically the same hole. Using a 155g Lapua Scenar. I like the Scenars better. They anchored them right there.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Nice pics Jered. What kind of blood trail are you getting? I shot a small 8pt Monday and I guess the deer drank a can of fix it flat, no blood trail!!! The entry wound looked liked it sealed it self up but the exit wound was impressive. Hit the deer text book sweet spot and he left two dime size spots of blood. The deer went maybe 20 yards bleed out a little more and then crashed into a tree 10 more yards.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

In my experience they typically cremate stuff. With my 284 I've taken things all the way out to 1111. While that's not a smart choice with a 284 it's been done. That being said I put the smack down on a doe 2 weeks ago at 375 and she ran 40 yards and there wasn't much blood at all. That one threw me for a loop. I can show you endless photos of large deer taken at the Timberghost ranch with a 284 slinging 162's. Most are shot inside of 200 yards. To date the farthest distance ran is 40 yards. Most of these deer are big deer over 180 class deer. One of the managers owns one of our 284's and people show up intentionally without a gun just to hunt with it. Just ask Jeff about "Ginger" if you call up there. Her resume would stifle most people. The 162 Amax track record over all has me personally head over heals with it.

This would be the largest "Amax" feet for me to date. 22 cal 75g Amax at 975 yards in a 15-30 mph gusting wind.

Anyone ever notice how ugly this dirtbag gringo is?

Wesley is ugly too!

Impressive, how'd it go? Out of what cartridge? I didn't think I'd stretch my .223AI much more than 500 meters on larger animals

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

NOLO,
The truth is a lot of things but it is always the truth. Gringos are sexy and all Mexicans know it.
I'll see you in 30 days my friend.

Bevan,
The cartridge was a 22-243 Ackley.
Honestly if you had the ordeal on tape you would trash it and hope no one found it. I have never seen an antelope that hardy.

Re: Amax Hunting Pics

Finally got to try out the 168 amax out of the .308 today on a buck. And all i can say is i have found my bullet of choice. 496 yards entered behind second rib and exited out the off shoulder leaving about a golf ball size hole. he just stood there then took 5 steps and hit the ground.
