Norway
The gun laws in Norway is sadly pretty stupid, i am only allowed to own a certain amount of rifles.
When my grandfather past away I got an old Mauser 98 in mint condition.
The laws are so that you can inherit up to 3 guns that is not part of the so called weapon wardrobe of max 6 guns for hunting.
I already have an 700 sps tact in a AICS with a Reflex suppressor, Ior 3,5x18x50 scope in .308
3 rifles in 22lr
a couple of shotguns
a Sauer 200 STR in 6,5x55
First I was thinking of building a hunting rifle myself, but spending 1000 dollars on getting a semi build rifle with the original barrel in 30-06 doesn't seem to be so clever when i can buy a new rifle for hunting for that money.

so here is my idea....
strip the reviver
mount a new barrel with an unknown caliber. 6,5x55/300wm/7mm RM
Mount and bed to a Mcmillan A5
Mount a picatinny scope base
weld a new bolt handle with a tactical bolt knob.
m70 type safety
Timney trigger
tubb speedlock fiering pin and spring
I'm trying to find a bottom metal with magazines.
Mount a nightforce scope on top.

Please come with some comments on everything, still very wage on what i want....
I'm already putting together a build on the Sauer for long range.
This will be my winter long range rig in white camo.

It's only been 36 minutes. I'm sure someone will chime in eventually.

How's it shoot?

Re: An uncommon rifle build

This is probably not what you want to hear, but I'd leave that Mint Mauser 98 just the way that it is. It takes a lot of effort to customize one, and doing so would ruin any collector value that it has. I'd look towards a more modern action to build on, one that has the features that you want.

If you like the Win safety and detachable box magazine, take a look at the FNH SPRs, if they are available in your area?

Just my opinion, and good luck to you,

Bill

Re: An uncommon rifle build

i agree, mint mouser 98, leave it just the way your grandfather left it to you, those old mausers are really nice looking old rifles. and they shoot great. keep it nice like your grandfather had it, and think of him each time you take it shooting!

Re: An uncommon rifle build

Thats the problem, there is a mauser in pretty much every house in norway, you can buy them for 200 dollars.
but this is my free of the gun rules rifle since it doesnt count as a hunting rifle because it has been inherited.
So now i'm thinking about what to do with it...

Re: An uncommon rifle build

I have to admit, it makes me sad to think there is someone out there looking to chop up a piece of history. I know the gun laws can be stupid sometimes, but if your 98 is from the war, there is a lot of value there that would be lost with this build. It just sucks that you are put in the position you are with retarded gun laws.

Re: An uncommon rifle build

the Mauser was made in 1936;)
I was first planning on hanging on on the wall, but then i have to weld the bolt stock according to the laws, so now i'm thinking that it would be better to use it for something than to let it stand inside the locked gun cabinet where nobody can see it:(

Re: An uncommon rifle build

sounds like an interesting build. i'm working on doing the same thing with a springfield 1903a3. ordering my stock after new years and getting some decent glass for it with my tax return.

Did some googling and found this 6.5'06

Re: An uncommon rifle build

If I were to be building another rifle on a Mauser action, I'd probably try and do up something reminiscent of a Parker Hale M85, or more likely a C3A1 style rifle.
The Mausers can be made to feed from GI M14 magazines with some extensive rebuilding of the trigger guard and floorplate. And I know CDI was looking around for interest in a Mauser magazine conversion; maybe follow up with them.

It might be a paint in the butt to do, but I'd probably look into fabricating a scope base/rear sight assembly to complete the look of the flat top Mauser action.
ChrisF posted some excellent photos of an M85 here: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=64534

It may be just me, but I'd find it much more fulfilling to build something with a little story to it, rather than just another tactical rifle.

Some Mauser builds; just for inspiration...

I know this next one is hideous, blame the customer, not me!

Re: An uncommon rifle build

It's not the thumbhole that bugs me on that stock; it's just too thin behind the "wrist" where the thumbhole is. That and it's ugly :p
Doesn't help that that particular stock was designed for a 10/22 originally; customer just happened to see it and want it... I really did try to tone it down a bit. It originally had a huge palmswell on the forend, and was significantly fatter from the ejection port foward. He ended up thanking me for the thinning.
