another 300 Win Mag load question

Hello

This is my first post since joining this forum, looked many times but finally jumped in.

My question is based on my attempts to improve the present sweet load for my Sendero based 300 Win Mag, (altered a little) which so far does quite well with W-W Brass; Fed 215 primers; Berger VLD 210 Bullets and around 72 - 73 Grains of Rel # 22. Velocity is around mid 2800 fps in our UK Tropical Climate!!!!

I haven't had as much luck with H1000, got as far as 78 grains with the above combination of components but only getting 2730 fps, accuracy not bad at close to 1 inch at 100 yards but not stellar and not as good as the Rel 22 load which can cut a 3 shot group of under .5 inch at 100 yards on a good day.

My question is one concerning Retumbo of which i have got 2 tubs to try, I cannot find too much load info from people who have used this powder in the win Mag as compared to the ultra Mag with larger case which seems to like Retumbo from what I have read.

Has any one got practical experience of this powder and how it may work, I am looking at probably starting at 80 grains but accept that I will soon be into heavily compressed loads, any help would be appreciated

Thank you in anticipation

Jonathan

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

K, I can only comment on the RE-22 and it is great in my PSS. Win brass, 215m primer, 72-72.5 grains of RE22 and SMK 190's. Shoots great in my gun and will not change a thing. Does not help but if you have a good load stay with it and possibly trade your powder. I have heard that Retumbo works great in a 26"+ barrel.

Cheers

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

For me RL-22 for 180's is the best, With 200 and above H-1000 rules, never tried Retumbo

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

There is another thread, what is the best long range bullet for the .300wm or something similar, where someone posted a good bit of data for the 210gr vld's and i think data for retumbo, h1000, rx22, and h4831 was included.

edit: copy & pasted the post.

+1 on the H-1000. VV N560 will also do the trick. Retumbo might but it will be a compression load for sure.

Here is what Berger sent to me for the 210 VLD...hope this helps! Sorry it doesn't copy and paste well but you can pm me for better copy by email.

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

Hey there, Im not a million miles away from you, I'm in Wakefield!! Im using the 208 A-max in my Sendero 300WM and Have had better results with the H1000 at 77.8gr. Im happy with what im getting in terms of accuracy and velocity at 2850, I did wonder whether I might go higher with Retumbo but I just cant be bothered continuing to mess around with different reloads in the hope of 50-100fps. Maybe York Guns or Hannams will trade it for you?

I have found good advice on this site because my 300 was very finnicky until i tried the suggested a-max/H100 loads. Unfortunatel I have wasted a lot of barrel life constantly chasing my tail with it.

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

I have a custom Mauser action with a 27.5" barrel that really likes the
Sierra 190gr Matchking bullet with 71.0gr of IMR-4831 in WW brass and
CCI magnum primers.
Average velocity for 10 rounds is 3031fps.

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

Thank you everyone, the best advice maybe to stick with Rel 22 as it is doing well and the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rings very true, just that I had 2 tubs of retumbo and like many, you always wonder if the next load tried will be "The One".

I have got to 77.8 of H1000 but never just reached that "sweet spot", that said as my rifle is primarily supposed to be a hunting rifle read "carry rifle" but still weighs in at close to 13 lbs as such I do not load the 210 VLD into the leade but stand them off by about .010" this advice was given to me by Walt Berger in e-mail, I know the Bergers do tend to shoot better from just touching to into the lands but I have not tried them as such, doing so may even see my best group with rel 22 improve, I do not know.

As some have said, you can devote your entire barrel life seeking the unnatainable.

Chris, where are you doing your shooting for long range, being Wakefiled I am guessing you frequent Diggle Ranges and are a contemporary of Peter Walker?

I did toy with re-chambering the Win Mag to Ultra Mag but for the extra i would gain for use here in the UK I deemed the expense as a little excessive, that said i have tricked by Sendero up here and there and not only does it look different it performs differently. i was content with it until i wathced some footage of the Chey Tac and 416 Barret on You Tube and then!!!! Oh well don't you just hate looking over the "other side of the fence"!!

Regards

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

I do shoot at diggle yes. I know of pete and have met him briefly but have had no dealings with him. I shoot mcqueens, some tacticals but the ones i like are the f class shoots at 1000. I'm no master but I enjoy my shooting. If you ever fancy trying diggle out(if you have not already), there is a great shoot on there on bank holiday monday, "the egg shoot". 1000 yard f class the day before too. I will be busy that weekend.

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

FWIW, I have tried all of the aforementioned powders in this caliber, including the Retumbo. My barrel length in both of mine was 26 inches. I was not impressed with the Retumbo at all for this caliber. I got good results with the H1000 after some experimentation, but much better and as of yet have found nothing better than RL22, although if memory serves me right (which I cannot count on) I ran a little more than the 72-73 you are talking about. This is not a hint for you to go heavier in your rifle. If you try that do it very carefully

Re: another 300 Win Mag load question

Believe it or not, try some IMR7828ssc. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
