I've been reading for several weeks trying to gather as much info as I could before asking any questions so here goes. Looking to get my first precision rifle and wanted to get ya'lls opinion on the best route to go. I already have a Rem 700 Mountain Stainless in 7mm-08. I use it as my deer hunting rifle and I've been quite pleased with it. Should I use that as the basis of a precision set-up since I already have it? Things like new barrel, action truing, trigger, better stock, etc. Would it be cost effective to do that or would I be better off trying to start off with a 700 sps tactical rig or the like? I would certainly like to keep from breaking the bank my first go round if I can. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Use the action you already own would save you money. Just don't go out and buy a new Remington 700 rifle or action to build off of.
If you are happy with the hunting rifle you got, keep it as a hunting rifle and build something new. A Remington 700 sps tac could be a great base to start from.
Do you plan to hunt with your future precision/range rifle? Its possible, I do it. But given the choice I would not mind to have one rifle for hunting and one for target/competition/range work. My Tikka T3 in .308 weighs in at about 13 pounds. I imagine that your hunting rifle is quite a bit lighter?
As long as your not intending to put this "precision" version in a chassis(I have found that to be not as much fun trooping around on a deer hunt), I say use the rifle you already have. Stickah 24" varmint barrel in there, m40 or m24 style stock. You can do both hunting and long range target with that setup. (and it looks cool as fuck)

Precision rifles, all trued up by anyone reputable with match barrels and quality parts will cost you ~ $3K if you provide your own receiver. Add about another $1K (min) for a scope, base and rings set.
