Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

I'm going to order a barrel for my Stevens 200 project soon and i'm pretty sure 7-08 fits the ticket.

Are there any other calibers that offer similar barrel life and performance I should consider? I shoot a lot{10k +} in a year so barrel life is important to me.

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

You will love it. Great barrel life, great bullet selection, better ballistics than the 308, and very little recoil. What twist are you looking at? Mine is 1:8 and it handles any of the heavier bullets.

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

Great option for a SA. Performance wise it is in the top 2 or 3 for a SA if you throw out the short mags. Don't think you will regret it at all. My partner shoots one and it's a tack driver. I chose to go with the 284 so I have a little more case capacity. Hard to go wrong with the 7mm bullets!

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

i cant think of any reason not to, only thing i could say about it that's not positive is wellll........... nope cant think of anything.

seriously, good round good barrel life, accessible projectiles. bras sure plenty of that. reload data good and plenty. yep i think that sums it up. sounds like a winner.

if i don't do a 338LM next im doing 7-08, actuality may consider selling my 308 to buy the action. but that be next year.

god luck

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

Excellent cartridge choice, my personal favorite, and better ballistics than .308 or .260 Rem. Lots of bullets to choose from, lots of reloading data available, light recoil, etc... What's not to like about the 7-08. I'm going to have an old 700VS rebarreled to a 7-08, action trued, heavy barrel and 26" long. It should be a tack driver.

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

708 is a great cartridge - I talked a buddy into one about two weeks ago. One plus not mentioned is the brass: readily available, as all you need to do is resize 308.

Me? I chose 284. Just couldn't help myself when those 150fps called my name...

Brass is one of the other reasons I chose 7-08 since its pretty much free since my friends don't reload and I get all of their .308 brass from them.

Now I just need to figure out what I want to run for glass.

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

Get the 1 in 8 barrel. It will allow you to run the 180s if you ever feel like dropping larger game and it will ensure any bullet is stable at any velocity. I love mine to death and when the day comes I shoot this barrel out im going to rebarrel in the exact same caliber. Its already become my old faithful.

Reason not to pick it....... Your shooting buddies and competition may hate you more once you learn how to use it ;-)

Good Luck,
Merritt

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

Not to rain on this parade, but isn't one negative the difficulty of finding factory ammo? I've been told it's a great round for reloaders, but not so much if a person will be relying on the store shelf.

This would also be a concern if things go bad- forget/lose ammo. 308 is plentiful.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. It's been awhile since I bought ammo and I've never went looking for 7-08.

Interestingly, I actually recently emailed Hornady about this - suggesting the marketplace is more than ready for a new, heavier, 175-185gr Hornady amax or bthp...AS LONG AS THEY CAN MAINTAIN THE FANTASTIC FORM FACTOR OF THE 162.

Surprisly (and very cool!), I got a reply a couple days later from the assistant director of engineering saying they were working on it, but it's been a challenge - and they'll continue working on it. I've got high hopes!

Yep

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

Just one more comment from the peanut gallery. Not to disparage the 7mm-08 because as stated by nearly all, it is a great round. BUT, if you want just a little more uummmpphh please consider the .284 Winchester. Its just a slightly beefed up 7mm-08 and still in a short action.

Yes, to an extent (especially with longer 162gr class bullets). Sure, you can seat them to fit a standard 700 box magazine, but you start eating up case capacity.

Re: Any reason I shouldn't go 7-08

The .284 will come later down the road when I can find a long action, I wanted a .284 but decided its better off in a long action where I can make full use of its potential.

I've been down the 6mm road before and it didn't really suit my needs all that well.
