I posted a few weeks ago about not being able to reconcile the OD of my 6.5 Lapua brass after resizing using a 288 bushing. The OD was coming out way smaller than the bushing. I got a 290 bushing, and the neck size came out .278. I took out the bushing and the neck size came out .278. So, the die is smaller than my bushing.

I am going to call Redding monday. Can anyone confirm that their Redding 6.5 Lapua S type FL die is not necking down to .278 without a bushing?

Sound like the small area below the bushing and before the shoulders is under size.. It needs to be larger than the bushing you are using. Call Redding and explain. Merry Xmas..Joe

Although obvious, I find it hard to believe that the die slip past QC.

I am doing the first round of resizing new brass. When setting the die up, I had to use more than normal force to resize the body. I never could get it to bump back the shoulder until it crushed the shoulder. I wrote that off to new brass and the shoulder had not pushed out enough to be bumped back. This has never been the case with the other cartridges I reload for.

Just befuddled. I will call Redding Monday.

The Redding guy said to check the markings to see if its a 6x47 Lapua. I told him I had already looked and I am pretty sure it was 6.5x47 Lapua. He said I could send it to Redding and they would make it right. And maybe someone put the die in the wrong box.

I got home and double checked, and sure enough it was a 6x47 die. I then look at the box, and it was a 6x47 box. I found the invoice, and it has 6x47 on it. Before today I did not know there was also a 6x47 Lapua.

So, I must have checked the item on the web site not realizing there is a 6x47 and a 6.5x47.

I going to call the retailer and see if they will cut me some slack, else its going up on Ebay. I do remember most everyone was out of the 6.5x47's.

So, I F'd up, but the Redding guy seemed ready to fix the problem.

Other than taking a loss if the retailer doesn't cut you some slack, You might get Redding to enlarge shoulder/neck junction of the die. If they won't do it for free (as it was your mistake, an honest one), then they should charge less than you would lose selling a used die.

It seems that it only needs to be opened up at least .003 or .004 to work. Body dimensions betweent the 6x47 and 6.5x47 are identical.

Re: Anybody got a 6.5 Lapua Redding S Type FL die?

I got it from Midway. They have a liberal return policy, and will take it back. I only resized a few cases with before I figured out my mistake. After all, I buy plenty from them, and have already ordered the correct die last night along with a few other needed items. So, I'm good, and should be back on track by the end of the week.

Good to hear that both Midway and Redding stepped up to help. I do business with both. My 6.5x47L Redding dies have been great - very nice product for a great cartidge.

Putting closure to this issue and my previous thread about bushing size.

I got the 6.5L die. Using the 290 bushing, I am getting 290 OD. This gives me .001 neck tension, which was the goal. I am back on track.
