would it make a decient "patrol" rifle for an officer in rural areas

Get it for $500.
However many of the ones that start with an AW ser # have a tight chamber and shallow flutes.
They will have problems with surplus ammo.
They prefer match type stuff.
Try it with some South African before you buy it.
The A series will chamber and shoot anything.

You can't beat that price, and if you decide you don't like it, it will be easy to sell. I bought one, and tried all kinds of different configurations in an attempt to fall in love with it, but ended up selling it off. Real easy to dump a lot of money into collapsible stocks, and mounts, etc. In the end, the ergonomics just didn't work for me. Mag release was a pain, the trigger was really heavy, and I didn't like the charging handle. The rifle was dependable, magazines are dirt cheap, and it is a cool gun, but in the end i decided my M1 and M1A served the designed purpose better.

You can get a DTI AR15 for $660 at AIM. Widely adopted platform, and no problems with any ammo.

I had one (just for range use) and I liked it, but like nucstl1 said, I just couldn't get used to the feel of it. I prefer my M1A. Nice shooting rifle though, and mine ate whatever I put through it. Definitely worth $500.

+1 dont use brass that you plan on reloading, it will render it useless once its fired from that ptr.
