hey everyone, I am an active duty corporal in the marines and i am getting out soon so i could go to school. but i am still deciding on whether i want to keep going in my military career after school. So i was intending on doing the reserves while i go to school.

so all in all, i was wondering if i could talk to someone who has been, or is in the reserves just to ask some questions and see if its something i would like to do or if its even reasonable for someone going to school.

now for the questions.

if I'm an 0311 but the only units in my home state are an engineers company and a Headquarters and Service Company. Is there a place for an infantry marine here or will I have to go to school for a new MOS? Will they even take me?

What exactly do reservest do in a year? (field ops?, Uniform inspections?, PT?, humanitarian aid? Training? ect..)

if i go reserves now is easy to transfer back into active duty after school?

if a reserve unit deploys do you up the training schedule to the pace of an active unit? how often do reserve units deploy?

I’m sure I have more but ill just start with this.. thanks in advance.

Re: Anybody Marine Reserves?

Have no idea if a unit would take you if you aren't part of that MOS. Best bet is to call the unit. Can find a phone number for the unit here. http://www.marforres.usmc.mil/units/index.asp

What reservists do in a year all dictates what kind of unit you are in. Field units go to the field. I have been with 2 different Infantry units and we usually would be in the field each weekend. Same thing with the Recon unit I was with up in AK, we went to the field each weekend. Also depends on the leadership, the guys at the Recon unit I was with told me that before I was there they hardly went to the field because of the lazy leadership.

As far as going back to Active Duty that would be dependent on your MOS and needs of the Corps at the time you are trying to go back.

Reserve units do up the training schedule. I think being in a Recon unit is probably different than an Infantry unit be we basically had a 6 month trainup before we deployed to Iraq. When we were at 29 stumps there was an Reserve Inf BN there training to. As far as how often they deploy it all depends on the unit. I would assume that deployments have slowed down but I am not too sure because I have been out for 3 yrs.

Re: Anybody Marine Reserves?

H&S has a scout sniper platoon and you can go active duty anytime you want. Talk to your local prior service recruiter they will give you the best info.

You would have to be a rifle expert, have a GT score above 90 and a first class PFT to go that route though.
