Hi,

Sorry if this has been hashed out before, I did a search and couldn't find anything. I bought two boxes of Black Hills 142gr SMK's for my new 6.5x284 for barrel break in to get started. Well I realized right off the bat that they were way hot--overkill for shoot one clean one. So I went ahead and loaded up some milder loads for break-in. I've been working up some loads with 142gr SMK's and have a decent 1/2 moa (three shots at 100) load at 43.5 grains of H1000, which is pretty mild and chrono'ing at 2850 fps from a 26" tube.

WELL, to make a long story longer, I tried the Black Hills today, and wham, 3 shots in a tight cloverleaf measuring just over .25" center to center. But they are HOT. 3040 fps and a slightly sticky bolt, no visible pressure signs on the primers though.

So I guess the good news is, it's kinda nice when a rifle is accurate with max loads. But I started thinking, what's the load? Could I duplicate and back off just a touch?

I'm also going to try some 4831SC as I know it's the preferred powder for the SMK's from what I read over on accurateshooter.com.

Anybody know the Black Hills recipe?
