Hi all,

I recently purchased a tripod, manfrotto pistol grip and a Hog Saddle for my DTA SRS A1 308. I ordered some Krylon Camouflage paint and I am going to embark on my first camo paint job. I plan on prepping the carbon graphite tripod with light sanding and brake cleaner before painting. If you guys have done this already, please provide tips. Should I just extend the tripod to it's max and spray it or do you recommend completely taking the tripod apart and painting the pieces before reassembly? Like I said, I am looking for any tips or suggestions, even if they are not related to my question.

Personally i wouldnt sand the carbon fiber - or at least be sure it is a very light rub. like SRS said, the friction locks will eventually wear the paint, but then since its krylon, its cheap to hit it again. On the hog saddle I taped off my vise pads. Didnt think the paint would hurt them, but for the price i didnt want to chance it. I took some old burlap cofee sacks - sometimes Starbucks will have em - and hit them with a little krylon and tied em into strips and wrapped the upper part of my frotto. helps with the break up when i'm out hunting.

Attached are pictures of my tripod, ball head and hog saddle that Custom Gun Coatings painted for me. I believe he disassembled them before painting them and not sure which coatings he used. The paint on the legs has not shown any scrape marks yet from telescoping them. His handle on SH is Shortbus and you may want to check with him on what coatings he used.

Agreed, degrease and spray. Put some Blu-Tak / sticky tak in the ball joint to stop it clogging up with paint. Takes seconds to add/remove and is easier than tape.

yes -- best of using flat primmer and **very light coverage**. I've used a Primer that was listed as Kaki and it very closely matches coyote brown. leave extended until completely dry and then some. For the first few days make sure not to tighten your tripod legs..

I have painted full size but this pic I s the only I had on my iphone-- it is holding up the Vectronix

Diver, what is the larger square item on the far right tripod? It looks very much like an acoustic or Doppler radar based ballistics tracking system....

Curious now... Great setup!

I wonder how brake cleaner will effect the resin on the carbon fiber? If anything I would use the epoxy paint from Brownells, Aluma-Hyde, and still be aware that the sliding action of the legs will wear the paint.

I painted my Tripod and HS Precision Stock

I painted my tripod and rifle stock with "Aervoe" Military Vehicle and Recreation CAMO Paint. They have many colors. I used Dark Green as the base, Earth Brown, Sand and Black. All were flat based. After wiping down tripod and stock, used Dark Green as base then held pine tree boughs along side tripod and stock to add the other three colors for an even mix.
