I got lucky today and found 3 boxes to order. Seems that everything else is hard to come by these days. I'm out of the 178 A-Maxs that I've been using and those are on backorder till who knows when. So I'm hoping that I've found a suitable substitute. Am I good to go without having to go through load testing, burning up more powder and lead, and be close to dead on? What are ya'll loading? Almost forgot to mention that my rifle's a 308win, 26", 1:12.

Thanks,
Mike

You'll probably have to do some load tweaking since the AB's have a little longer bearing area IIRC.

AB's copper fouled my barrel like a bitch, too. Watch for that as the gilding metal is softer than the jackets on SMK's and Amax's. Accurate though.

I can't give you any advice about loading them for .308, since I shoot them in .300 winmag and .300 WSM. I've found them to be very accurate bullets, I've always been able to get them to shoot well. I've never shot SMK's or large quantities of A-max's, so I don't know how they foul in relation to those bullets. I shoot 190 Bergers for my long range load, but the 180 AB's are my GO TO hunting load. They always perform how I want them to, penetrate deeply, and just shoot well.

I have never shot the 180s. I have shot 165's in an 06 and the 160's in a 7mmRM.
I personally don't think they live up to the hype. I have shot 100 of each and experimented with seating depths and powder only to find the accuracy to be mediocre.

I've had good luck with the 200gr accubonds for a hunting load up to 400 yards. Beyond that I use the 208 amax.

The accubonds were very accurate out of my rifle. 1 grain charge weight down from what I was using for the 208 amax and it performed very well. 300 yard groups hover around 1/2 MOA with the accubonds.
