I could understand an aftermarket tube for a pistol build, but apart from that do these buffer tubes do anything different other than cost more than a standard mil-spec tube?

well, they get rid of the castle nut (good or bad you decide) also have the QD anti rotate sling attachment point built in. If you take that in to consideration or a mil-spec LMT or Vltor and an anti-rotate end plate the cheap one is very close in price.

Check out DMack's thread about the PWS MK114, he talks about their buffer tubes in pretty great detail. From what I remember, they are supposed to help reduce felt recoil or something along those lines. He'd be the one to ask though!
