Rifle Scopes Anyone tried the Meopta TGA75 w reticle?

Re: Anyone tried the Meopta TGA75 w reticle?

I have an 30x80 Optolyth scope that looks identical to that, except it has the fixed eyepiece. I would say the cost and the optical quality of the two units are virtually the same and it wouldn't surprise me if they are not made in the same factory

I bought mine for a very reasonable price 2nd hand as a first spotter.

Having used it for several years, I am not overly taken with the draw scope concept. They can never be water/moisture proof as they take in water laden air when you open the scope and unlike traditional British draw scopes, they can't be easily taken apart to dry out/clean.

In a dusty enviorment you also have to keep the tubes dust free or you risk damaging the seals as you close the scope.

The eye relief on mine is very short and is no good at all if you wear glasses.

When fully extended and mounted on a tripod, the scope is very ungainly and is easier to knock from the target.

Personally, I think I'd prefer a used Leupold Mk 4. I think the Meopta may have better optics, but as an overall package, I think the Leupold is better....

I should add that generally I am a big fan of Meopta and own a couple of their scopes, its just the concept behind this Euro style drawscope I am not overly impressed with..

Edited to add that Optolyth do reticle eyepeice for their conventional spotters:

But the complete scope with eyepiece is probably about US $2000 for the 80mm TBG package...

Very good information, thanks alot!

Tried the Leupold today and for the money it costs in Sweden, I don't think it is worth it. Might end up with a non-reticle one in the end.

Since you're from UK Peter, do you know of an internet shop with a selection of spotting scopes? Have dealt with opticswarehouse before but they don't sell many spotters.

I have one and like it very much. It's small enough to easily fit in a small pack or saddle bag but provides a much better view than compact spotting scopes I've looked at.

The reticle is obviously very useful for spotting long range shots, ranging and measuring things. It has 1/2 Mil marks which is helpful. A few shots:

That apartment building is just under a mile away.

Note, the FOV, both actual and apparent, is too big for me to capture with any of my cameras so that's why they all look cropped. The 30X eyepiece has a FOV about the same as the 20-60X eyepiece does on 20X so it's a "big" view. I'm thinking of picking up a 20-60X eyepiece for mine for when I'm not using the reticle.

Re: Anyone tried the Meopta TGA75 w reticle?

Great pics, thanks Jon!

The field of view seems very large, at least compared to my NXS on 22x, where I have approx 15 mils fov. The meopta seems to have 35-40 mils fov on 30x.

What about eyerelief, any problems with getting a full picture without having to press the ocular into your eyesocket?

Thanks!

I 've bought a few items from Bristol Cameras over the years and their service has been good and prices competative.

In fact that where I got my Nikon 50ED spotter from...

Like yourself, I am looking for spotter with a reticle..If I lived in the States I'd get a Leupold Mk4, but over here they are silly money..

The Bushnell Excersion FLP is another possibility and is very reasonably priced if ordered direct from the States. My only concern is that it has recieved very mixed reviews with regards build quality.

Zeiss used to do a fixed x30 reticle eyepiece for their standard spotters but they have been discontinued, or at least they are no longer available to the general public.

I know they can still supply the item on spotters for Goverment contracts, but I just can't lay my hands on one.

Another possibility is Vortex as they do a x30 eyepiece for their Razor Spotter, but this is an angled unit and really I prefer a straight spotter.

If you like, you can borrow my Optolyth for a couple of months and see how you like the draw scope design in the field..PM me your name an address and we can sort getting it over to you..
Regards,
Peter

I have no problem. However, I agree it is not the best choice for those who wear glasses.
