Anyone try 178 A-MAX in SASS?

Re: Anyone try 178 A-MAX in SASS?

Ran them in my AR 10 build it did fine it likes the 175 SMK better 1:11.25 twist. I run the 168 and 178 Amax in my Tikka T3 Bolt with great results. I like the A-Max perfromance a lot and they are extremly consistant batch to batch

It figured the AR 10 would not run them as well as the bolt since I had 600 or so on hand. Murphy is my buddy

+1! They work VERY well depending on whether or not your particular rifle and load get along.

You may need to double-check your OAL and keep them as close to 2.80" as possible to ensure 100% feeding/function from the mags.

My REPR shoots these pills very well which has the 1:10 twist (and down range performance is great.... 6.85" spread at 750 yrds).

Rolling my own. FWIW, I am not aware of Hornady offering the 178gr A-MAX in a factory loaded .308 Win. They offer the 178gr BTHP in the Superformance Match line, but not the A-MAX.

I would personally recommend that you NOT run Superformance in gas guns as I have personally seen high-pressure signs, blown primers, etc. with it.

That's what I've been hearing. I'm thinking of contacting SW Ammo and asking if they could throw a box of them together with max OAL for the P-Mag. Worst they can do is say no.

I am shooting a RRA LAR-8 and all I hunt with is GMX Superperformance Match ammunition and I generally practice with match SSTs or with handloaded 178gr A-MAX, LLC brass, with a similar recipe. Are you recommending that no one use this ammo or just not in gas guns? I am curious what kind of gas gun you were using and what the specs were, how much ammo had been run through it, type of ammo shot out of it, etc, or at least the observable conditions that caused the failures.

Re: Anyone try 178 A-MAX in SASS?

Hornady has recommended against the use of Superformance ammunition in semi-autorifles with short-length gas systems due to the pressure curve. Rifle length systems are fine. There used to be a webpage available at their website detailing the Superformance ammo and the gas system issues, but I haven't looked to see if it's still there in some time.

Edit - found it:

FWIW - I have run the 75 gr .223 Superformance through 16" and 21" piston guns (mid-length gas system) with no signs of overpressure or issues with extraction/cycling.

Re: Anyone try 178 A-MAX in SASS?

I've used the Superformance BTHP's in my bolt gun, but never tried them in a gas-gun. Sorry. They are noticeably hotter, but I never even thought about having an issue in a semi-auto. Glad for the forums!

Re: Anyone try 178 A-MAX in SASS?

178 Amax's have been my choice in my AR10T for years, they slightly out perform the SMK's in it.

178's, 44.5gr Varget, 210m's or BR2's, FGMM brass, COAL 2.810. Its a fairly hot load for the T, start low and work up.
