Mom's knife set has seen better days. Don't hold much of an edge anymore. I wanna get her a new set for Christmas and figgered the Cold Steel set is a safe buy but I can't take Lynn Thompson with a straight face.

Are these on par with their other fixed blade and folder options? 230-some bucks is a nice investment.

Two Words:

Henckels Professional.

Start with a small and large Santoku:

Then add a bread knife, boner, and parer. All she'll need.

I gave my GF a 7 inch boner for Christmas a few years back. She really appreciated it.

Ive never used their Kitchen knives but I have a ReconII and it is easier to sharpen and holds a better edge for longer than any other knife I have ever owned.

Wusthoff or Henckels. Or Forschner. Heck, even the economy line Henckels (what you usually find at Costco) would probably be fine. I've used a set for years. Certainly good enough for an average user.

haha I see what you did there...

I figured Cold Steel probably isn't the place to go but since I'm single I spend my Sundays at Home Depot instead of Bed Bath & Beyond looking at kitchenware.

I'll look into all the companies you guys recommended. Should probably start looking at a set for myself anyways.

I have Henckles and Cold steel and the Cold steels are pretty good for the money,I have a set of serrated steak knives and they've stayed razor sharp over the last several years.

I'm a big fan of Wusthof. We have several.

That said though, my wife chooses to use this Kansui Ink Pattern 5" Fruit Knife for pretty much everything.

Sound advice. We have a "set" comprised of individual knives purchased over several years.

I use one knife probably 98% (almost always) of the time:

    Wusthof Classic 7" hollow-ground Santoku:
