great round if you run it out of long action and run aics 300wm mags. i shot 162s out of mine at around 3000fps. get some rl17 it really is magic in the 284

284 on a LA kicking 168 Bergers right @ 3000. Puts my drop charts really close to the 180 from my 7WSM with less$.
Moon did a great job on both.

Yes I've heard Reloader 17 is the powder. I guess if you go to the long action you have to ask yourself whether it's worth looking at a 280 AI.
I used to shoot bowling pin matches at a club on Whidbey Island. It's a lovely part of the world!

The recoil is a little bit heavier than the .243 that's all. I just got the APA .284 win a few weeks ago and loving it.This is a hammer for sure. Here she is.

i have probably met you then since i live 3 miles from the whidbey island range and used to shoot the bowling pin matches every now and then. but once the long range bug bit me i have neglected my pistol shooting.

Me too, I got into long range - I guess Al is still running the shoots there.

I am having a .284 built and after running all the numbers over and over again the best performance is probably with the 162 amax or 168 vld. With a average length barrel you can get to 3000 fps. The 162 amax can be pushed fast enough to out perform the 180 vld for a long ways. In the 284 win it seems like the 162 or 168 is the way to go. If it was a 7mm mag type round then the 180 vld can really shine

You guys really need to start a 284Win reloading section... I didn't see anything over there. I'm SERIOUSLY considering this for my next precision match/lope killer rifle.

4831sc and 175 smks have been working great for me and quite a few other guys that shoot our matches. true, the 180 vld is a ballistically superior bullet but the 175 smk was very easy to get shooting good and a whole bunch cheaper.
