I am an optics guy and would like something that I can use from CQB ranges out to the effective range of my AR's . I have seen the USO , Leupold , Nightforce and other high end offerings but they are a bit beyond my reach financially . Is anyone running one of these ? How is it holding up to abuse ? Is the BDC reticle fairly accurate on man sized targets ? Is the illuminated portion of the reticle visible without illumination (I would hate to be SOL because a battery failed)?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me .

Re: Anyone using the Burris 1-4x XTR

All I can tell you is that the two Burris TAC 30s 3-9 I just bought sucked. Hazed out over 100 yards. The Leupold 1-4 I have on my AR 10 DPMS 16" TAC, is a great scope (I own four), crystal clear and bullet proof. (this one lived in a 12 Ga deer slug gun, then a 400 H&H rifle). The other 3 are on a 10 bore Turkey gun, a 375 H&H and a AR 15. Good shooting!

Have a look at an IOR Valdada M2,it is fixed 4X,great glass and recticle, built hell for stout. The prices are pretty reasonable too,Finish is pretty crude.Only way I would get rid of mine is to get another ACOG,or trade in on the USO or NF.

IMHO the XTR is the best value in a 1-4X with true 1X performance. I am very satisified with the clarity. Make sure you get the brighter Gen 2 reticle. The Trijicon TR24 would be my next choice but they are hard to find. The reticle is not daytime illumination so yes it is clearly visible with the illumination off. Mine is a Gen 1 but the Gen 2 lit reticle is reported to show up well on a dark background in daylight. I have only banged steel at 300 yards so I can not personally attest to the accuracy of the BDR at all distances. They have a lifetime warranty so I would not worry about it holding up.

Re: Anyone using the Burris 1-4x XTR

Michael,

I run the Burris 1-4 XTR on my M4 for competition. I love it. I have another custom AR coming in and I will put another 1-4 on it. I am using the the 60 grain V-max and the 68 grain BTHP. It mates up very close to the 5.56 BDC reticle out to 600 yards. The nice thing about the illumination is that it has a dial you can change the intensity/brightness. I was shooting a softball at 300 yards 2 weekends ago on 4x. The 300 yard dot didn't quite cover up the softball, but it was close. So, for a man sized target it would be fine. I also wanted the true 1x for CQB. It can be a challenge to shoot 1/2" groups with it due to the 4x and dot, but it works great for it's intended use. I highly recommend it. Let me know if you need some pricing on one, I get them at dealer pricing.
