Looking to purchase something in the 5-700 dollar range. I'm aware of the gen 2 PSTs, the Burris XTR, and the SWFA models. This is not my primary rifle so not looking into saving and spending more later, just seeing if anyone knows of anything else I might should take a look at.

I have to agree with steve123 on the reticle selection. Ideally, I'd like to be able to buy an Ares BTR with the original reticle, but the same turret knob clicks/detents as the Midas TAC. But, since I have both scopes mounted on several rifles, I'll just settle for enjoying very good quality scopes at very attractive prices... I tend to click rather than hold off in most cases, so the reticles aren't quite as important to me as they are to steve, while the turret clicks/detents are more important. Not to say I find the Ares BTR's clicks too indistinct to be usable - far from it. I just like those of the Midas TAC a lot more.

I have both the Nikon Black and the Athlon Ares. That said I won't buy another Nikon scope.

Mines a piece of crap, won't hold zero and I was never able to get the zero stop to work. Feels like the threads need to be re-taped it binds up and won't thread down past half way. But the glass is clear.

Love my Athlon. Right now I'm looking at the Midas Tac the caped windage turret and the AP3 retical look good to me for my .308. I think it runs around 650$.

Might be something to consider. Good luck.

I have a cheaper Athlon - Argos BTR 10-40X56 - and it absolutely rocks. Bought it for the reticle and higher magnification. Glass quality is surprising in a good way and the scope tracks perfectly. Nice solid clicks and turret detentes. Not as good as the Vortex Golden Eagle but it cost me less than 1/3rd the price.

I'm now an Athlon Whore.
