Looked and couldn't really find anything. I'm probably looking in the wrong spots so looking for some guidance. I'm trying to get into some competitions for shooting [obviously]. Really would just like attending some, talking to some guys and to shoot [not to win right away obviously, but for fun]. Wondering if there was anything I could shoot my savage .223 in.

Thanks for any help

tacshooter223,

Check out our thread on tac comps.. "cabin fever shoot at TVP" there is a youtube vid of us shooting the short course at TVP.
We are about 2 hours from you. I have other shooter/members of TVP from your area. Please come visit us if we are not to far for you. Your .223 with love the short course. 178 yards to 560+ with the option to go further on station 2 out to 882. We shoot from one yard to mile at TVP.

All our shoots are fun!!!

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

I have heard of TVP and plan on making a trip soon. But the farthest I've shot is 300 yards so I was planning on honing my skills before making the long haul and embarrassing myself in front of all you pros! I will make it out some day but was looking more local. Thank you for the response though!

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

Sir,

We have LOTS of new shooters here. All our shoots are geared toward training, although there is a high score at the end of the day we basically use our matches for trainings days. Don't worry about emabarrassing yourself here, it's not that kind of atmosphere. Everyone is more than willing to help. Also, if you wish you can schedule a day with me and I will take you through our steel course to show you more of what we are about. If you don't mind maybe say hey to some of the guys over on the TVP thread and mention where you live. I sure we have about a half dozen shooters from your area you may be able to drive with or follow over.

Good luck!

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

You'll do fine. Come on down to TVP or hit up Rayners on Feb 27th for the monthly match. Rayners match happens the 4th Sunday of EVERY month Feb-Oct.

I lived in Pgh for 13 years and the drive to either place isn't too bad.

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

Ok thank you gentleman. Tom, I've heard a lot about you and even meeting you would be great, let alone shooting with you. I'll have to do some more research on locals and see whats going on.

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

Don't worry about going and being embarrassed. Heck, they let me shoot and don't laugh too much. Both ranges have a good bunch to shoot with and will offer plenty of help if needed.

I frequent one more than the other but hope to even them out more this summer. We all gotta start somewhere and the only way is up. Ya don't need special equipment to start, use what ya got and later on update as needed.

That short range match is a good starter at TVP but still very challenging. Both their long range and Rayners long range match will test your skills and you'll learn more in a few weeks of that than years on your own.

Aw, heck, just come on out. New shooters are always welcome. We even let those funny guys without stocks shoot..

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

I'm going to try to get out to TVP this year with bohem. That sounds like a great time.

We have some LR matches scheduled this year in Lewistown PA which is your side of Harrisburg if that helps you out. Newer shooters are always welcome with us too.

Re: Anything near Pittsburgh PA?

That place is the best place to learn IMO. I am light years ahead right now where I would be if I had not ever discovered that place. THanks TOm for the knowledge I got from all yall. It was lifechanging to say the very least. I am not aware of ANY place like it where you can just enjoy a simple day at the range to an all out full blown lesson with the resourced Tom can provide. Knowledge and gear are well stocked at TVP. If you aren't satisfied from there then you will not be anywhere else and need to hang it up now. (and you should ship me your .223)

If you're giving away lefty 223's I'll take it. I'm a southpaw who will actually appreciate it!

I concur with everything that RobertB said, go early, go often to TVP. Even just sitting there by myself and shooting I learn things, when the more experienced guys are there to help it gets better and better.
