I have enough Bolt guns to play with for Long Range, but was really thinking about a AR-10 .308 to play with for 500-600 yards or less. (Part of the year its going to run night vision for pigs in Texas though!).

I have built a few Ar-15's and have the knowledge to build a AR-10 BUT, if you had about $2,000 (without scope) to put towards a AR-10, would you buy a complete gun or do a ground up build? What barrel length is normally best, etc.

Any help and specs would be appreciated.

Re: AR-10 Target Gun

base DPMS then go buy the stock and rail system you want and trigger and more mags then find a custom barrel blank have it chambered up and cut to possibly 20" I run a Rock 5R at a 24" length and love my rifle

Re: AR-10 Target Gun

I'd order parts you want and have a custom barrel chambered/cut and installed (if you don't want to do the install yourself). By the time you buy a base DPMS and replace all the parts and the barrel you'll spend more money.

On another note...

What do guys think about the 300 SAUM option? I don't know much about the cartridge, doesn't seem like much for factory options but I know DPMS does an upper in that caliber and at least from first glance it seems to have a significant ballistic advantage over the 308 in the same size package, similar to the 300 WSM.

Re: AR-10 Target Gun

I own an Armalite 10-T. With the feature that come with it, 2-stage trigger and all, I'm surprised that it was not mentioned? The DPMS rifles I've played with in the local shop, aren't as smooth as my Armalite. On the otherhand, I hear they are nearly impossible to get.

What's the story?

The 24" stainless T was discontinued in favor of the 20", and for 500-600yds, that's all you'll need. The Armalite T barrel is a Walther Lothar triple lapped, recessed crowned and a real nice barrel. The two stage NM trigger is -OK-, but there are better, like the Giselle or the Gold. Then it becomes a matter of optics.
