Hey everyone… I’m new to the AR-15 world and have a question about disassembly. I was taking it apart after shooting it and didn’t lower the bolt before taking the upper and lower apart. As soon as I started to separate the two, the bolt slammed closed in the upper. I’m just wondering if this can damage anything? I appreciate any advice!

Whatever you do, don't cock the hammer and pull the trigger without the upper and the bolt in place. In other words, don't do it when the lower is separated from the upper. It'll beat the shit out of the hammer and the lower.

I sent a bolt release flying doing that at a training range on FTCKY in front of a bunch of Joe’s. Fucking stupid shit we do.... they wanted to feel the difference between an issue trigger and a Jewell SD trigger. Glad that mistake was cheap and easy to fix. Had it been the hammer, it would have been significantly more expensive.

Yeah, there are hammer blocks that you can put in the mag well, but it's just better to not get in that habit in the first place.
