On a precision ar10 build...anyone notice if there is any difference in accuracy ,if any, when the barrel nut on a free float is torqued to any particular tightness?

Re: AR accuracy and barrel nut torque

Bill Alexander, of Alexander Arms, says to torque barrel nuts T-I-G-H-T, especially on harder recoiling cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel and .50 Beowulf. He says that you can usually get by on a .223 with a semi-tight nut, where the other guns will show horizontal dispersion.

Sorry, no magic torque values given. You might try asking George at GAP how tight he torques the AR-10s he builds.

Re: AR accuracy and barrel nut torque

interesting...maybe a barrel harmonics issue...definitely cant effect headspace... I dont know what George will say because i had a GAP Ar10 years ago and removed the Badger Free float and it came off with little effort..he didnt torque it that tight and accuracy wasnt all that either.

I have experimented with Ar15s torqued lightly to the min required 30ft\lbs and after grabbing onto the verticle grip after some aggressive runs through a course...came loose. Wasnt to confident about light torqueing.
