I am in the process of trying to find a barrel for my new build, AR this is my first AR and my first build. don know if i want to go custom or not. looking for some tips or suggestions on where to look. I would like to keep the price fairly reasonable.
specs of what i am looking for:
.223, 18" 1:8 or 1:9 twist. this is going to be a varmint "coyote" hunting rifle!

Re: AR barrels?

that is where i confused! i know i do not want to skimp on a barrel but i do not want to pay a arm and a leg for one either!
do i need chrome lined. is a .223 good enough or should i get the 5.56, or wylde?
guess it boils down to i want a good shooting AR, i cause i do believe this will be the only one i own!

Re: AR barrels?

You can get a good stainless steel barrel for not too much more than a basic barrel. Do you need chrome lining? For your stated hunting purpose, not at all. Go SS for the precision aspect.

The chamber is up to you. Are you going to shoot 5.56? Do you at least want the capability of shooting 5.56? If your answer is yes, then by all means go with a 5.56 or Wylde chamber. Otherwise you can easily get away with .223 but if you ever intend on selling it later you may have some difficulties.

Call Scott and he will take good care of you, and also answer all of your questions.

Re: AR barrels?

Too many to mention as far as good barrels out there. Noveske, PacNor, Kreiger, WOA, and on and on..

Chrome lined is better for wear but usually less accurate than SS. If accuracy is your main goal.. SS.

Spend most of your money on a good barrel and trigger... worry about the rest after you have that.

Length depends on the velocity you want.. it won't make it more accurate. Twist depends on the weight of the bullets you plan to shoot. 1:9 is a good compromise and will shoot 40gr to 69gr. If you plan to shoot heavier bullets go with the 1:8... 1:7 isn't really needed unless you are shooting 80gr bullets.

Re: AR barrels?

Get a White Oak. I have 4 of them, they all shoot under 1 MOA with my handloads, even occasionally get under .5 moa. If they shoot that good, no need to pay more.

Re: AR barrels?

I have a DPMS LR308 that is shooting less than stellar so this past week I phoned Krieger and ordered a barrel from them. I think I'll be happy with the move. Only Neg. is a 13-16 week wait for the barrel.

Scott is the man.
You should just have him screw you a rifle or upper together.
You know a guy builds good AR's when one of his uppers is picked up off a match's prize table by George Gardner (NorCal '09)

Re: AR barrels?

Re: AR barrels?

A guy I work with has one of teludyne's straightjacket systems on a DPMS AP4 308. Haven't heard how it shoots though, but he seemed happy with it.

Re: AR barrels?

I'd definatly agree with the recommendation on Scott. I have have great success with Black Hole Weaponry barrels. I have three of them. They all shoot 1/2 MOA or better...
