looking for AR mag covers. the ones that exert slight down pressure on top round to protect feed lips. is this a desiable feature? i believe magpul covers do this. who has them in stock? do magpuls work with conventional metal mags? how about tapcos? they are in at midway. thanks.

The magpuls are magpul specific I believe. I don't think they will fit the tapco's either. I'm not much help, sorry. I think your best option that I know of would be to get some magpul mags..

I've never seen any aluminum/steel mag covers for standard USGI mags that will do what you are talking about. There are some "generic" covers (like the Tapco ones you mentioned) that will keep dust/dirt/debris out of your mags, but as far as anything along the lines of the Magpul snap on/off dust covers that compress things down to take the pressure off the feedlips...none that I'm aware of. The Magpul covers will NOT work on standard USGI mags because there are no attachment points on those mags for the Magpul covers to snap on to.

As for the Tapcos...Brownells regularly stocks them in 10-packs: http://www.brownells.com/magazines/.../ar-15-m16-magazine-dust-cover-prod32476.aspx

There are many others out there besides the Tapco ones including ATI and others. As they are more or less just cheap plastic/composite caps...I'd buy on price alone and not worry too much about the mfg. They'll all accomplish the same basic function of keeping some degree of crap (although they don't "seal" anything off) out of your mags and protecting the top round(s) in the mag from getting beat up during transit/storage/etc.
