Hello,
A newbie here I am sure there have been a lot of questions on AR style builds particularly rifled in .260. But it would be too easy for me to ask the same old questions, but I want to build an AR style rifle using an American Spirit Arms (ASA) receiver with side charging handle I hate!! Charging handles on top. Here’s the twist I want an upper rifled in a .260 with a 22 or 24” barrel with a 1/8 twist. And I want an upper also with an ASA receiver side charger style with a barrel rifled in 22-250 with a 20 or 22” barrel with a 1/10 or 1/12 twist.
Keep in mind I will be hand loading and will want the .260 for long range 500-1000 yards and deer hunting. And the 22-250 for 500 to 600 yard shots at max for coyote/ varmint tagging. Yes I could use the .260 for coyotes/ varmint too, but I want fur friendly and don’t want to worry about ricochets. I would also be doing a suppressor option. I own a 22-250 bolt now and just want to move away from bolts, never liked um much. I also have a 270 rem pump that I use for deer now. So with all this, what kind of problems could I run into? Yes I already know mags may be an issue with longer bullets, but I can’t find much more info than that. And I want to build at least partially so no complete buys. Any other thoughts?

Re: AR style build questions 22-250/.260

No problems with the 260, however I will say that I prefer the 6.5CM in the AR platform because the case is a little shorter to help accommodate longer seating depths. With the 22-250, I am not sure of magazines in the LR/AR 10 platform and with the OAL of the rounds, it can really only be done in the AR 15 platform with an Olympic UMAR lower and their proprietary magazines.

I have built a few 6.5 CMs on LR308 platforms and I have a 25 WSSM on a UMAR lower.

Re: AR style build questions 22-250/.260

Thanks for the reply, I kinda figured from research the .260 would be okay but the 22-250 might have the most issues. And I cannot do a hands on right now of the cartridges since I am overseas now. Its kinda hard to get an idea of the differences. I have read too that the 6.5 would be a good choice but I already am setup for 22-250 and 260 reloads. Can I make it work for 22-250? Would it be a modification of mags? My goal is to be able to use the same lower and bolt, just have to do a simple swap of uppers.

Re: AR style build questions 22-250/.260

22-250 is going to be a bit of a pain in the ass. It has more body taper which gives it that trait. Olympic arms has figured a way around it but honestly I would end up making a 22-243 instead. This way you get similar performance and keep the reliability of the standard 308 family case. This will involve extra steps such as neck turning and you very well may loose some brass in the process of sizing if not careful. Me personally I would use a match target bullet in a 243 with a slow twist and call it good. If you want to use a 22 and not do meat damage than just run an AR15 platform in 223/556 and call it done.

You will have to have 2 different guns.

The 22-250 is ONLY available from Olympic Arms and is a modified SMALL frame AR (AR-15 sized), the 260 will require a LARGE frame (AR10 sized) receiver and upper.

I have a oly umar in 22-250 and love it. I use it for prairie dogs shooting 40g nosler BT. No hold over for 300 yards. I call it the wind cutter. It gets the dogs really airborn. You may want to consider the 6mm creedmore in the ar10 frame. It would cover both bases.

Re: AR style build questions 22-250/.260

Just been reading the post also a newbie to the site. Currently working on a .260 AR build myself. I decided to go with a DPMS upper but it is going to take 7-10 months for the upper to even come in. Frustrating yes but it will give me plenty of time to be able to afford the rest of the build and glass to go with it. Was just wondering what kind of loads will be shot out of your rifles. I am very interested to see what an AR in .260 can do.

Re: AR style build questions 22-250/.260

Well, I managed to find someone who has built an AR 22-250, from another site and he had cycling issues after build but it was due to gas hole needing to be sized correctly he managed to work out the bugs and is enjoying an AR 22-250. He built it on DPMS platform using .308 lower and custom barrel from Harrison, he uses the same mags and same BCG and has not had any other feeding issues though he said he can only fit 5-7 rounds in the mags. So it can be done but he did say it was expensive, but he got what he wanted and didn't have to settle for anything else.

I will eventually have a 22-250 upper built for now and when more funds come available have a second upper built for .260 and attempt to use the same BCG for both. I will have a modular AR that's my hope anyway, still in the research and planning phase. Anyone know of somebody who can make a barrel for me in 22-250? I am still calling around and sending emails.

@kylon, Sorry I don't have much experience with .260 this will be my first build also but I only here good things about the .260 though you have other options and you will hear a mix from lots of people but its up to you. I have done lots of research on this round as well but just to see if I can make it work for both my builds. What are planning on using it for competition, or hunting?
