Hey guys, im doing an AR10 build with an armalite upper and lower and want to build it so that it is pretty light and easily carried. I want to build the gun for a few different duties. I want it light enough for hunting/run and gun but I also want the barrel and action to be great quality for good accuracy on some longer shots. I'm putting a Weaver Tactical 3-10 mil/mil scope on it. Maybe 600 yards max. Most of the time it will be under that.

So, I was thinking maybe a 14.5 barrel with a pinned flash hider or maybe just go with a 16 incher. I still need a BCG too. Any suggestions on a barrel? Who all makes them? I know Noveske does, but they are a biittt expensive... I could swing it if its worth it but was wondering what else was out there.

Do yall think chrome lining should be used for what im doing? I think I want a stainless barrel maybe a bead blast like the noveskes. Do they even chrome line stainless barrels?

I need advice and maybe some pictures. Thanks guys.

Re: AR10 Barrel for Carbine/Hunting/Lightweight??

When building an AR, don't skimp on the barrel budget. Rainier has some good options in SS, but also look at some of the Rock Creek offerings. Length between 14.5 and 16" is splitting hairs, just remember the shorter you go the more blast you'll feel/hear. I personally don't like welded muzzle devices though.

Keep your weight down with a lighter forearm, and also consider fluting. Don't run a pencil barrel to save on weight.

Just how much "run & gun" are you going to be doing? Heavy class 3-Gun matches or just some fun every now and then? If you're going to be shooting fast I'd recommend chrome lined, but don't expect the same accuracy level at distance.

Thanks for the advice. Fluting would be awesome. I wont be doing a ton of run and gun... just every now and then. I have some german surplus 7.62s in battle packs lying around... The gun would mainly be for hunting and target shooting. Maybe 16 fluted and threaded would be good and a light fore arm. Im probably gonna run a light collapsible stock too.

Any advice about what BCG to get? Just a regular armalite one? thanks man

Bowtie, please keep this thread updated with your decisions. I'm about to start a simialir project, which will be my first AR10 build so I need all the input I can get.

As for Noveske, I've used thier barrels on some AR15s with zero complaints. They are chrome-line stainless, and IMHO about the best you can get as far as weight/durability. Precision, however,is not thier strong point but only to the extent that there are better precision barrels available. To be sure, there is nothing wrong with Noveske accuracy, for hunting it provides more than enough.

I've searched some and think I might go with the Rainier arms ultra match 16" barrel... Anybody had much experience with them? So far, i've read they are very accurate and as light as possible. They are Shilen blanks that are worked on by white oak armament...

Hi if you are after a really good AR10 barrel i would get a rock creek 16"barrel with an ABS carbon wrap it will draw the heat away from the bore and also create a stiff ultralight barrel that would really work well. they are not cheep but awsome.
