Looking to build an ar15 but can’t decide on a caliber. I mainly shoot 600 yards and in it’s mainly going to be a bench gun or prone I am not worried I have to reload for it I am thinking 6mm turbo with a 30 degree shoulder but open to suggestions
I had an AR with a Stag Arms 24" varmint barrel in 223 that was a tack driver. It loved the heavier rounds. Bushmaster makes one as well. DPMS now makes one in 6.5 Credmoor.

.223 is very capable for target shooting out to 600. I have a 24" .223 wylde that I shoot the 73eldms with consistently at 600. I have reached out to 880 with it but at that range that little 22 cal was dancing in the wind.
6.5 Grendel would be the ticket for a smaller platform.. My LaRue 6.5 G shoots great. light, accurate, easy to suppress
But buy the time you start paying for Match 5.56 or 6.5 G It is not that much more just to shoot .308 or even 6.5 CM if you hunt around for good ammo deals..
A 223 with 18" to 24" barrel, 8 or faster twist and shoot 77smk loads. Unless its windy 600 is boring, 800 is a little more challenging.
The only negative is them small bullets dont kick up much dirt when you miss so tough to spot.
I personally would go with .223 because I like to stock as few different type of magazines as possible and out to 600 there are a lot of really good bullets...
although the 6mm ARC that was recently added to SAAMI (speculated to be from hornady) might get me to reconsider if only because I REALLy like 6mm bullets (but that's my own personal thing I got going on haha)
If you have no problem reloading for a niche caliber, your 6mm Turbo (or any other 6mm/.243 based wildcat) would probably get you the most out of the platform. If you prefer to have factory ammo options available, .223/5.56 is fine out to 600y with heavier/longer projectiles - no need to search for something different. If you want something more capable than .223, but still want some more factory ammo availability, then you should consider the 6.5 Grendel or .224 Valkyrie.
