I want to get a steel target for my long range shooting fun... im running 6.5 grendel, 308, 260, and at the biggest right now a 338 lapua.... what thickness steel do I need to get? Im thinking half inch plate...

They will be shot at 100 yards to over 1000.... I havent seen bigger 50bmg plates just the small gongs for the 50...

Wheres the cheapest place yall habe found to order? Ive seen shootinsteel.com

Advice?

go to the group buys and see JcVibby, Jake has targets and the stuff you need for stands, fast ship, competitive price and all for a great cause.

Yup, use this guy^^^^^

Free shipping and I shoot his 1/2" targets from 100 out to 1585 using .22 on up to .338lm. Mind you I shoot the .338 at distance and not under 500y.

Depending on the size of your target a 1/2 inch target gets to be a pain in the ass trying to man handle it around. I would go with 1/2 inch in a smaller size for 100 out to say 400 and then 3/8 on out from there.

3/8" or 1/2" AR500 will do just fine for your needs. If you plan on running that 338 lapua at 400 yards and out, I would recommend d getting g 3/8" Premium AR500. It will last a lifetime!

Thanks for all the kind words guys. If anyone needs anything, just send us an email or PM and we will get you taken care of.

I have got them off ebay and then from JC. For my money I'll only buy from JC (great thing they're doing with the kids). I like to buy 3/8ths as it rings better. watch that 338 at 100. My buddy shot his 338 ultra mag at 100 and left about a 1/8" dent. I just replace them as needed. The 1/2" tends to thump instead of ring.

I have 3/8" AR 400 steel target that I have shot with M193 @ 100yd. It left about 1/8" dimples in it. I haven't tried 308 at 100yd, but at 300yd it barely leaves a small burr on the target. I would think 3/8 AR 500 would definitely work just fine.

Was wondering how 1/4" AR500 would stand up to the 300 mags, or .338 Lapua if you weren't going to shoot it inside 1000 yards? I would think a 1/4" would ring better, and in my case not be so heavy, when you have to carry it. On one of my ranges, that would be 2000 yards. I'd be too tired to shoot after dragging a full silhouette that far. I always hang my steel from chains, so it can swing freely.

I have a 3/8th chest plate I pop at 200 yards with 5.56,7.62 and x39 and there is no to minor damage. 338 I wouldn't shoot less than 300-400 yards due to just waste of such a expensive large caliber. But should take it at 300/400 yards.

I'll just echo what the others have said about JC Steel targets (jcvibby). Great work for a great cause. His quality, services, and prices are awesome. Group buys that he runs sweeten the deal even further.

Save the Lapua for 400+. That's what you buy a gun like that for anyway. 3/8 should work fine on everything else 100+.
