I'm looking for a barrel to put on my rem 700 long range rifle. I know barrels like rock, kreiger, benchmark, bartlein, lilja etc etc are very accurate. How would a rem sendero barrel compare. You can usually find them for a good price already chambered and threaded so it has been on my mind. I am looking at either a 300 or 338 RUM. Thanks guys.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

Mine was very accurate, after I had my gunsmith set it back and cut off a couple of inches and recrown it.

The gunsmith told me that Remington barrels are notorious for having messed up rifling near the crown. He must have been right, because it sure shot really well after he did that work to it!

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

Comparing any Remington factory barrel from a stock Sendero or 700 to any custom barrel like Rock Creek, Lilja, Bartlien, etc. is an apples and oranges comparison at best.

Yes, some Remington barrels can be made to shoot better by recrowning them or setting them back...but generally speaking they won't compare to a high quality barrel.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

My shooting partner had an original Sendero that had been re-chambered to 7 STW. It was purchased from the original owner and he stated that the gunsmith had only rechambered and no other work had been performed.

Not sure how many rounds had been through it up til then, but it only had another 500 in it when my friend got it. But for those 500 rds. that thing would put 3 shots one on top of another at almost any distance. 1" groups at 500 yds were not unusual. It would consistently put 3 shots under 5 inches at 1000 yds on the gong. After 3 shots, the barrel was so hot you couldn't leave your hand on it (165 gr AB's clipping along at 3300 fps

Trace on that thing made my 300WM look like a rainbow) When it went south, it happened in under 10 rds. One minute it shot, the next it didn't.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

yes they are accurate ;

i have a had two sendero's in .300winmag, the first was the stainless fluted, it was a tack driver

the one i have now is the gen 1, chrome moly non fluted , it too drives the tacks

but plan on replacing it, if you shoot it much
sendero's are in big, over bore calibers (7mm Mag, 300 mag)
and barrel life suffers . . .

i re-read your post , if you are looking for a takeoff barrel to put on a action / rifle you already have , then be careful and look closely at what you get

for the same reason above -

try to find a new one , if at all possible

have fun with it, good all around rifles

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

Yeah I would be a take off or something along those lines. I am trying to find a 338RUM but dont think they made one... So proably and great condition sendero barrel in 300RUM should serve me fine shooting maybe a amax or VLD. I just want to make sure they are plenty accurate for what I want. I have some other guns with rocks on them and love their performance. If I can get a sendero barrel chambered and threaded for $125 or so I can save a few hundered dollars. It is by no means going to be a match gun. Just a long range rig I might take hunting in alaska and might shoot some rocks or paper with at 1000 yard to impress someone. Thats about it.

I do know they chambered the Sendero in the 338RUM at one time because I had a used one in my hands. Had intentions of buying it until I removed the stock and found a hacked up bedding job, the thing was bedded all the way to the forend tip. There are probably some out there but are going to very hard to find.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

Don't buy it unless you borescope it. Look for dry lake bed/lizard skin in the throat (should be nice and smooth) and nice sharp edges on the lands. It can be set back a little and take care of minor damage, but a couple hundred bucks savings is not worth having a barrel installed and getting 500 rds out of it.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

I have many top of the line barrels. Bartlein, Kreiger, Hart, Rock, Schneider ect. One of the most accurate is a Rem VSSF. I would not spend the money to put one on as it is a crap shoot. Just try out one of the rifles and buy it if it shoots. Or get a custom barrel. Otherwise, you may loose more than you hoped to save. Nothing wrong with a factory shooter. JMO

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

I have a Sendero in 7 mag and a VSSF in 22-250 both are great shooters. The catch is...I purchased both used and was able to test before purchasing. Unlike my custom rifles some of which were purchased new. If I were to rebarrel either one I would not use a factory barrel as it is a real crap shoot as suggested by RTH1800. Save a little and go the custom route. You will spend more money but eliminate a signifcant amount of risk and most likely ensure better accuracy and longevity.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

You can get an ER Shaw barrel for not much more.
It is not the same as a Krieger or Bart. etc... but they have a solid rep and it is not the crapshoot that a take off barrel is.

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

have a sf in 7 stw and a sf gen2 in 338 ultra. both are .5" rifles all day long @ 100 for 5 shots. you can gain some ground by seating the bullets out past mag length as the throats are kinda long. i seat 250 gr sierra match kings in the ultra to 3.850 oal. that puts me about .005 to .oo8 off the lands and gains me .1-.2" in group size on an average day. both rifles were purchased used. smoke'm while you got'm, vic

Re: Are sendero barrels accurate???

ER SHAW is not going to get you much more as far as quality;

their barrels are spotty - hit or miss

if you want to go custom but as cheaply as possible i will PM you a link

shhhhhh, TELL NOONE it's secret squirrel stuff , heee heee
