The power company's in Fla ran a op at Christmas of 1989 to 'Allow the public" to get a taste of reality. The incident changed a few minds that lead to the public demanding more base load plants be built. Before that event no one wanted those ugly & stinky plants near them to power their hair dryers and such,...
Much like the Fla event if this happens, history will show those who never rely on others for their family's safety, will all of a sudden have "Friends" that think you should bail them out of a simple life event, they deem a disaster.

What happened? I was in Panama.
All the power company's in Fla got together an gamed a plan to teach the public a lesson. They knew that storm was coming and intentionally took base load plants offline for "Routine maintenance" while other base load plants were already off line as well. (It takes a long time to get a base load to design output)
I worked with many of their EE's all the while I lived there, and was warned it was going to happen. It was supposed to be just rolling blackouts 1 off & 1 on, but the engs told me it was going to be otherwise in some places. I was on TECO at the time, went it hit at about 0800 12/24/89 it was for 23 hrs save a few minutes here & there. Long short we had 24 people in a 1800 square foot home as the temps were just 17* outside. I've always had whole house backup generation, the only thing that saved that genset during that event was the outside air temp.

Ahso. I recall my wife telling me on MARS how cold it was on Christmas day.

Yep it was cool 17* F IIRC out side of Dade City (Pasco co.) The low temp is what saved me from dropping neighbors(had ran wires to them) off my genset, as the Alternator was getting warm per what the RTD's, were saying on the remote display. Glad I had built her as stout as I did, otherwise I'd would have to unplug some stuff.
