It all depends on WHICH mag you are talking about and the terrain you find yourself on. With a 6-9" harris or an Atlas, you shouldn't have any problems shooting prone, on level ground, at the bipod's lowest setting, using a 20rnd AR-10 mag. The 20rnd mags when fully seated in the rifle extend just slightly below the pistol grip. However, the 25rnd mags are a no-go unless you are using a higher bipod as they are basically the same length as a 30rnd AR-15 mag (just for comparison sake) which are way too long for prone bipod use.

Personally, I prefer a shorter mag for shooting prone (like the 10-rounders) so that I have plenty of clearance between the bottom of the mag and any obstructions, uneven ground, etc. It is just easier to maneuver with a shorter mag installed in the rifle.

Also, just so you know, Armalite is running one of its 5-pack specials right now on all but the 25rnd mags. You get a 5-pack for $150 which is a great price on these mags (the 25rnd mag 5-packs are $200).

Re: armalite magazine length question

i would for the most part be on level ground. im wanting the 20 rounders most likely but would settle for less. its frustrating that the smaller round mags are the same cost as the 20 rounders...

thank you for your input! and heads up on the armalite special

Re: armalite magazine length question

i ordered a 20 rounder from Brownells and your right its very close. But since i am thinking about the accu monopod. I don't think i'll have to worry about it.

Re: armalite magazine length question

At $45/mag from Brownell's, plus S&H, you are getting HOSED on those prices. Before you drop any more money on Armalite mags, next time let me know and I can give you a couple of other sources that are much cheaper (although none as cheap as the $30/mag bulk-pack deals direct from Armalite).
