I have a brand new Armasight CO-X gen 2+ HD clip on system and was just wondering if I should have the intensifier tube upgraded to a higher resolution tube? I’m using a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 scope and was wondering if I would be able to run a little higher magnification if I did put a upgraded tube in. Also is the IR illuminator that came with it the best I can get? I’m shooting coyotes at 300 plus yards and would like to have the scope on a higher power than 5-6x. I haven’t used the system but once and I’m still not familiar with it yet. I do know I’m wanting to get some additional mounts for it. I’m using it on a 18” AR with a 15” rail, but plan to put it on a 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action with a NF ATACR 5-25x56, so I’ll need another mounting system for that. My question is should I get the tube upgraded and what type of mount should I get?

Will that illuminate a longer distance than the model that comes with the CO-X ? Also will it be possible to use my day scopes up to 8x or maybe 10x? They are both Nightforce, one first focal and one second focal plane.

the gen2+ is good working clip-on especially if it ones with the photonis tubes . ( imho ) I would not burn more money to upgrade tubes .
the goal of you shooting Coyotes at 300 yard at Night is a goal I dont even do with a good Gen3 tube .( You can do it ) but the conditions will have to just right, and (for me) that usually never happens with Calling and shooting Coyotes at night .
( scope choice ) .. if were me. I would use the 2nd focal plane because the Ret. will be much bold/bigger/darker on the low powerX magnification . I have put some hours on the Armasight gen2+ clip-on, I never used a armasight NV illumination so can't comment .
The gen 2+ and what power you use on the higher magnifications ( It will all depend ) on the conditions your hunting in .
Your amrasight gen2+ (example) ..half Moon or bigger in open grass field, then Yes maybe 10X power .. No Moon and a low cloud ceiling and black night , then that a Big No, and you will be keeping Day scope down to under - 4x and using Illumination to shoot . that Unit you got 'should' give a good image @ 8x with good conditions .
Any good gen3 tube clip-on will give you 'easy' 8x to 12x with a great image . I rarely myself ever go past 6x even with using a gen3 tube & when I am just sitting and calling I usually keep the day scope it on 3X just on the fact I have better field of view and I can get on target faster for shot . I always choose to get them in under 200 yard .

I'm running a co mr 3p now but had a co x gen2+ prior. I went with the co mr simply because a really great high spec mx10130 format tube was available for it and at the time I could not track down a mx11769 format tube as I was informed, that I was happy with for the co x, nor beat the price I scored the 3p co mr for.
Some good advice given above, I also find myself keeping the magnification under 8x...generally I stay around 3-4x also for best fov. I also ran with a sfp for fear that the reticle would be too small at the lower mag ranges of ffp.
I am guessing you have the 850xlr, that was the illuminator that came with both units I own(ed). That sucker is pretty bright, I believe it is running somewhere at 1000-1050mw which is fairly stout, its a little brighter than my osram t20 I think due to the slightly larger lens. If anything I would guess it would be closer to the t50. There are some 1350mw led t50- and t66 type ir out there but you will pay a price in weight and a faint signature particularly with the 66 at the right at closer distances if that matters to you. The only thing I did not care for the xlr850 was that it does not have a push button tail cap but other than that it is a decent fairly powerful illuminator in my op.

I was thinking the same thing as far as using the second focal plane scope. As far as where I’m hunting, it’s open cut fields in prairie type terrain. I just need a way to mount the NV clip on in front of the scope on a bolt action rifle with a standard type stock. Meaning that I don’t have any type of rail in front of my scope, so finding out the best way to mount it is my next priority. Thank you for all your advice, it’s been very helpful. I’m going to stay with my current Gen 2+ tube.
For a clip on expect it to start to really go south around the 6-8x range. My PVS30 can go around 12 or so before you start getting what looks like vasoline vision.

Armasight sells a mount that gives you the option to directly mount the Clip On into your day scope ,
with out the need of a pic rail , therefore,
you can still mount the NV to any weapon with any kind of stock
you can also find this particular mounts online on eBay or Gunbroker , they sells in different sizes depending on your scope bell diameter
