With the ATACR 7-35 focusing down to 10m would I have any issue using this scope for hunting if I have a shot at say 10-15yd?

I know using my 7x Leica rangefinder I can focus clearly at deer at 10yd. Just want to make sure this scope can do that as well before I take the leap to buy one. Will be primarily a target scope with some light hunting work.

Describe this hunting trip... You gonna be walking around a lot or stationary?

Awesome ass scope for the targets that's a no brainer.

At ten yards you could club the animal to death with the 7-35 pretty much. Handled one in person the other day and was a little impressed with it's strength and heft let's just say.

Also what rifle is it going to be on?

Regarding use of the 7-35x for hunting ...

I used the 7-35x T3 for night critter control around my coop and cattle, at night, with a thermal clipon ... got 4 oposuum, 5 coons, and 2 yotes in Nov/Dec with this setup.

3x is a good balance for magnification at night. 7x is WAY too much ... but I made it work. Just took a LOT more time doing 360s and double or triple scanning the sectors.

Distances on the critters were 88yds up to 168yds ...

But for anything from dry firing at 10yds in the house, to shooting dots with 22lr at 25yds or dots with center fire rifles at 100yds ... or ipsc(2/3) at distances 500yds or 750yds I have had no issues with the scope. The wind dots are GREAT.

Ok. I should have been more specific, lol.

PA whitetail hunting. Most shots in the 50+ yard range. I typically Treestand Hunt. Just want to make sure if a deer gets closer than 50 yards I can still make a reasonable shot.

I was leaning towards the 5-25, but the parallax adjust is only to 50m where the 7-35 is down to 10m. That is why I’m asking about the 7-35.

Again, primarily a target gun but would like to be able to use it for hunting 2 weeks out of the year.

Will be going on a Q “The Fix” 308

I've shot two deer inside 25 yards with the 7-35x.. both were snapshots without issue. For a dedicated hunting rig, I'd look at something lower powered. If making a rifle pull double duty, maybe an offset RDS might be better for surprise stuff.

And parallax measurements are for full magnification. At lower power like 5x you're not going to have a problem. Besides, any parallax error is fractions of an inch inside of 50yds.

I may pack a revolver for super close range as well, lol. But PA rifle hunting for whitetail is two weeks and I bow hunt so may not even need to take the rifle hunting (fingers crossed). Just looking to see if that rare occasion were to happen that a deer is that close I can make an ethical shot. Sounds like I can based off your experience.

The main benefits I see of the 10yds (or say well under 50yds) parallax for any scope (and why I look for that feature) is for dry firing in the house (with high power and a clear image) and dots (or tiny scored targets) at 25yds with a .22lr with high power.

EDIT: I would also add it helps a lot with .22lr dots at 50yds ... because most scopes that say they parallax at 50yds ... well that really turns out to be some random number within about 20yds of 50yds ... if you want to shoot dots or tiny targets on high power accurately at 50yds. You need something like the 7-35x for that as well.

So it sounds like I misunderstood what the parallax adjustment was for. Thanks for the clarification.

So I guess it now becomes a question of ATACR 5-25 or 7-35 with primary duty of range shooting and secondary whitetail hunting. Also about $400 difference.

Thoughts?

"range shooting"

For me "range shooting" .. includes dots and groups (at 100yds for center fire rifles) as well as distance shooting (which I call "wind practice"). And for that combination of activities I like the 7-35x as for dots, no level of magnification is too much :D

Now for distance shooting, I am usually 10x to 20x ... due to mirage avoidance and being able to have enough retice (T3) close enough to the center of the scope, to hold with (T3 = no dial shooting).

So for me, the extra magnification is mostly for 100yd dots and groups. But secondarily it can be used for detailed spotting. "What is that over there in those trees?" and hence not having to carry a separate spotting scope. That's actually why I got it.
