I still don't know what makes people think that it is a good idea to have these signs, punisher skulls, grim reaper artwork and shit of that sort on their vehicles, residences, or firearms. Sure they make you look like a badass until a prosecutor looks at them and says: "All right, we got someone here who obviously seems like he goes around looking for confrontations." Which makes your SD case now a lot harder to settle.
From the scant details provided in this article, it sounds like the homeowner may have went out into the yard to confront the perp. Bad decision, from both a legal and tactical standpoint. When you are faced with an uncertain situation, your FIRST priority is to put yourself behind as much cover / concealment as possible and take full advantage of surprise and the high ground.
By going outside, you just put yourself way out in the open, fully visible as a target. Besides, you are also putting your family in a vulnerable position as well. What if the main perp is actually a decoy? Now his cohorts would find the opportune opening to barge right in while your back is turned to them.
