Ax butt spike, worth it?

I have the butt spike on one of my AI rifles - it's kinda cool, but I'm not sure I'd shell out $250 to install it on a rifle that didn't already have one.

I've been considering the same thing - but using it with a bag - sometimes, that extra inch or so would be helpful so you don't have to squeeze the bag so much or re-adjust bi-pod legs - but $250 is a lot.

I have AI rifles and all have the butt spike. I would say there could be a time it would be worth it but bags will never go out of style.
On the two AWs the spike is never in the way of getting a bag in just the right place. Different situation for the two AX, as they have the deep "butt hook" stock skins and the spike combined with those skins is a real PITA for me with a bag.

The general consensus I hear is that the AI butt Spike is not worth it. Almost all of my DTA customers that run the monopod on their SRS rifles feel that it is well worth the cost of admission.

What makes the DTA buttspike worth it and the AI buttspike not worth it? (Not trying to be an ass, just wondering.)

The DTA monopod deploys incredibly fast. It is very easy to adjust and is by far the best monopod that I have ever come across. On the DTA rifles the monopod tucks away very nicely and you can easily use a rear bag if you want.

Yeah, but there's three problems with the DTA.

1. It's a bullpup (which isn't lefty friendly, despite claims to the contrary)

2. Single stack mags

3. It's a bullpup (awkward bolt-manipulation)

Actually, we have found it very useful at matches. Reason being is that when shooting from an awkward position, when you are using a single bag, the buttspike extension gives you that extra 2-4 inches plus of needed extension when you don't have time to reset your bipod. It seems much quicker to hit the button on the buttspike, AX type, then readjusting the bipod under specific time constraints. There is much talk about limiting the competitors next year to the use of one rear bag only. Again, a buttspike would then be invaluable as again, the time constraints dictate a quick movement to find a solid position. Just one persons opinion....

I run a Desert Tech SRS in matches with a monopod. It is super helpful and very fast to deploy. I would be disappointed to see matches start limiting equipment, especially when competitors already have their rifles setup. In a match, time is of the essence on most stages. A monopod can be helpful in making quick adjustments as Dave mentioned. I wish the AI butt spike was flush against the stock when not deployed like the DT monopod, but in my opinion the AI Butt Spike is still significantly better than an Accu-Shot monopod.

1. The AI is also RH only. At least DTA has said there is a LH version in the works.

2. I know that DT will be coming out with a Lefty and 10 round mags. From personal experience, 6 round mags have been painful in many matches.

3. A bullpup is different, but with some experience it is not awkward to run. The rifle is much easier to move in, out, and around barricades. It is also easier to shoot unsupported than a typical bolt gun.

I love my SRS, but after handling and selling the AI rifles the past couple months, I am sorely tempted to pick up an AI and run it next year as my match rifles. Not having 10 rd mags is killing me in some matches.

You still haven't gotten yourself one yet?? hahaha
