So I'd like to gauge interest in a part I'm going to make for myself.
I currently have an AXMC and barrels are hard to come by and only select calibers & twist are available. I'm looking for a 224 caliber (22creed) barrel in 7 or 8 twist. I've called all the normal channels and nobody has one in stock. I contacted the barrel companies and they can make anything, in 6-8mths.
Well I'm going to make an adapter that will allow AXMC uses to select barrels that have a normal tenon. So instead of only using a 1.40" tenon you'll be able to select a barrel in 1.20" that they make in almost any contour, caliber, twist and ALL brands.

Machining will still need be done to ensure fit but it'll open up to a whole new world of options.

    Ideas ?
    Opinions ?

I dont believe you'll have enough meat on the insert to safely cut the m27 thread on the ID. Seems kinda hokey to me to be honest. I think the mc is a shitty short action caliber rifle in any event. Mine is such a boat anchor, it will never get a short action barrel screwed to it. I have an AW for that.

Why would you assume I'd use a m27 thread with that little meat ?
I was planning on threading the inside to R700 specs.

How much less does your AW weigh ?
According to specs it's actually 1/2 pound heavier 14.3 vs 13.8lbs

I use to think mine was heavy at 21lbs with scope & bipod. Jacob from Rifles Only told me when I thought about building a lightweight rig "get yourself a gym membership"

That presents the same issue. Remingtons have a 1.062" major diameter, .001 smaller than the AW/AT thread, at 1.063".

Never weighed either of them. The MC feels and handles like a much bigger and heavier gun. Downright clunky compared to my AW. I didnt buy mine as a do all gun, like some did. Just a personal preference. I remember jacob used to say that. I dont really buy that though.

I guess I'll find out and see if it works, if i have to cut it smaller I will and thread the ID diameter so it fits.

Most guys I know are running AT's, there is no weight savings from those either. I'm guessing the chassis under the skins is heavier then the AX handguard. Regardless I've gotten use to my gun and its weight. In our club matches the lightest I've seen is 14lbs, he had a Pierce titanium action, proof carbon barrel with some lightweight stock that we built for him. Although lite, I do recall recoil being slightly more from his 6.5creed, I guess it's a trade off.

I use mine for everything more cause I'm use to it already. All my other rifles got sold or collect dust now. The first one to go was the DTA, very soon it'll be the AT.

Either way, tomorrow I start with the adapter, I'll post what works or if I have less fingers.

I'll be interested to see it.

Krieger recently delivered a pair of custom .20 cal barrels in a little over three months. Not too bad. A large shank (1.350")bartlein I ordered in january should arrive today, so they're still running long.

With the MC, you need a 1.350" shank diameter for the M30 Threads.
When I ordered my 7mm Rem Mag barrel through LRI, instead of getting the 1.350". I mistakenly orders a large shank heavy palma which had a 1.250" shank diameter which wasn't going to work the M30 threads. So they made a sleeve to fit the ring/ bushing like that on a R700 barrel to fit a recoil lug. I was worried but after putting 450 rounds on it and shooting it at the Nightforce ELR match. It def works. They did a great job in making it work. It acts as a shoulder and it's not like you have to torque the barrel to the action like standard actions.

That's roughly what I had in mind, I was going to thread the adapter/lug so that it'll almost be as a remage system but with a permanent shoulder on barrel

But this pic simplifies what I had in mind.

Just to reiterate, they basically threaded the 1.250 shank to large tenon threads but left a recoil lug area to install that piece and mat up with the action, and still have the action secure it with the quickloc ?

Genius and that pic is gonna save me several headaches, I owe you a steak !!!

Yup. They shaved the sleeved after the threads. so that the bushing acted as a safety stop which is what the shoulder is there to do. Measures 1.5" from shoulder to breach which is spec for all AI barrels. The M30x2 threads left enough meat for the 'recoil lug' sleeve to install the bushing with an OD of 1.350" (which is what you need in an MC/ PSR) . Put 450 rounds in a month pushing 180's at 3100 fps (hot load) and no problem with accuracy or holding zero whatsoever.

Quentin at LRI did the work. Give him a call so he can walk you through it.

    Yes !!

i made a bushing like the one in the pic and was able
to use barrels of 1.250”. They lined up perfect and head spaced identical every time.
i took a used barrel left in the shop and spun it up in 22-6. I had a witness mark on the barrel and action, they lined up every time I removed and reinstalled the bushing.

its a very feasible idea that opens up to other diameter barrels. Just gotta ensure it keeps 1.250 for more the 3” on the shank.

So would I be able to use any pre made ax308 barrel off the shelf or would they have to be made with the specific shank?

    Nolegs24 is correct
the adapter originally thought to work was way to thin and not doable with my skills. But the adapter on the barrel to increase shoulder to 1.35” worked just fine. It’s slips over the threads and creates a false shoulder to use the smaller barrels, not the pre-made AX barrels.
