So went to the range the other day with the Fiance... and I took a projectile to the ear....

Was out at the 100 yard target stand swapping out targets. Turned to head back to the shooting benches, took about two steps and caught a flying projectile from the next range over in the ear. It flew up and over the 15 foot berm. No idea what it was but it was coming fast enough to drop me to my knees from the pain. Ear bled a bit and it swelled right up and took two days for the hearing to come back.

Cut our range trip short. But before this happened I decided to try the M40A1 after it's winter slumber to make sure it was still sighted in. Picked up a couple "hostage" targets from the local gunshot for something different.

Sorry to hear about your ear.I am always nervous at the range when shooters that i don't know are shooting. Some people have no business handling firearms.

Of course. They are doing an investigation on what happened.

Keep us posted please - will be interested to hear what they say. What’s the backstop on the adjacent range?

From the OPs description, I don’t think it was negligence. It was one of those one-in-a-million chances where a ricochet occurred and actually hit someone. Very lucky the OP didn’t happen to glance up at that particular moment in time!

I was where the red star is. The shot came from the next range over and there are 15 foot berms separating them. So calling Cease Fire on one range doesn't effect the other ranges.

The president of the club just wants to find out of they were shooting something other than paper targets and I got hit by a piece of whatever they were shooting or if I just happened to catch a piece of a bullet on a random ricochet. Then they will talk and see if they need to increase the height of the berms near the target boards or not.
