Rifle Scopes Bad Nightforce Scope?

I have a new 3.5-15x56 NXS scope with zero stop (NP-R1 reticle), and I'm about 95% certain that it has problems. Before I call Nightforce Monday morning, I wanted to run my symptoms by you all as a sanity check:

1) When I try to set the reticle focus, I end up with the eyepiece cranked fully clockwise. It feels like I need another turn or two to get the retcicle crisply focused.

2) When I point the scope at a textured, off-white wall that is approximately 30 feet away, I can make out the wall texture at 3.5x power (but not perfectly crisply). When I increase the power above about 6x power, the texture rapidly goes out of focus and is completely blurred at 15x. Turning the parallax adjustment through its full range has no effect.

3) If I aim at a point on the same wall at 3.5x, then nod my head slightly up and down or side to side, the reticle always shifts in relation to the target point. I’ve tried adjusting the parallax through its full range, and no setting makes any difference.

NOTE: I have an inexpensive RWS 3-9x40 scope on my air rifle. None of the above problems happen under the same test conditions. The reticle is crisp and I can focus the scope on the wall texture at all powers, and the texture is crisp at all powers.

4) If I set the scope to 15x and point at a tree 74 yards away, I can get a crisp focus on the tree trunk with the parallax knob set at approximately midway. However, nodding my head shows lots of parallax. The parallax is minimal at the low-end stop (opposite end from infinity) but the image is no longer clear.

5) Similar for tree at 60 yards, but focus occurs about 1/4 way from the low-end stop.

6) For tree at 25 yards, cannot get focus at all using the parallax knob.

Is it me, or does that sound like a bad scope?

Re: Bad Nightforce Scope?

Tough to get parallax free at close ranges, 30' definately won't happen with a NF. I only have a few scopes that can be parallax free much under 100 yards (of course it is really not a big deal, except on my .22).

Re: Bad Nightforce Scope?

Not being able to get it to focus closer than 50 yards is not uncommon. While I had a Nightforce on my rifle, I did find that when I had no parallax, the image was very slightly out of focus. But not near as bad as you describe.

You've obviously got more scope than experience - please don't take this the wrong way! I'm just trying to help you the quickest way I can

While this tutorial might be a bit long winded and some folks don't like the authors style it'll sure help you to understand what you're doing. It was written a while back and was primarily aimed at new users of Leupold side-focus scopes but is still pertinent regarding setting up your NXS. I'm sure that it will help.

Re: Bad Nightforce Scope?

Thanks for the info guys! The article provided by SpotcheckBilly really helped to fill in some blanks for me, and my expectation of the best focus and minimum parallax to occur at the same point was wrong.

I had set the reticle focus as per the NF instructions (same as Rijndael's) using an overcast sky. Today we had blue skies and I repeated again first thing in the morning with my eyes fresh and rested. I got the same results and still need to crank it all the way to the right.

When I head back the other way, I start seeing double-vision on the reticle ticks. Much later I start to see blurring. NF's instructions say "if the reticle focus is inadvertently set to the extreme ends of travel it can adversely effect parallax". Oh well, nothing I can do about my eyes.

I sighted at some more trees at 420 and 650 yards and was able to get parallax near zero while focus was only a tiny bit from perfect. Plenty good. I won't sweat the fact that I can't get focus at less than 50 yards. I'll play with it some more when I go to the range to zero at 100 yards.

Thanks again!

Re: Bad Nightforce Scope?

Excellent idea! I've been wanting to check out the reticle illumination anyway. I'll give that a whirl and see if I still end up at the end of the eyepiece focus range.

I went out and zeroed my rifle at 100 yards yesterday and everything seemed to work well. I was able to dial out all the parallax and the image was fine. So no bad scope, just pilot error.
