Does anyone know if the M4 bottom metal and M5 mag system have the same footprint? I have an M4 and want to upgrade to M5 but If it is going to take further inletting / new bedding then I will probably leave it alone. If it will drop in fit I may continue.

Thanks for the help

Re: badger bottom metal question

Front and rear are the same, sides are a little wider on the M5. I've done it with a slow hand and a dremel and it came out just fine. Now that I've got a varible speed dremel and one of them wand extensions I'll bet it would be even better.

Is your rifle pillar bedded? Who did it and what pillars did they use? If GAP then I'm sure the pillars are the right height for feeding from the mag, if you're not sure then I'd check that first as it "could" be a bigger issue than the inletting.

Re: badger bottom metal question

If your stock is inletted for M4 badger and you go with M5 will see that you will have trouble feeding rounds into the chamber.Ive experienced this with three diiferent rifles.the m4 is not as thick on the back end where the rear screw hole is.The m5 is much thicker, meaning your going to need to mill out some additional depth to your stock at the rear hole location.
Ive orderd Mcmillian stock from JW precision inletted for M5 and ive installed M4 badger instead only to find out the m4 fits very deep into the stock at he rear.the feeding and function are not affected but the rear screw had to be trimmed since it was protruding above the rear action tang in the way of the bolt preventing from cycling.
The most recent Mcmillian stock ,an A1-3 was orderd for M4 badger and i had to use an M5 because of the rem700 action being a factory detach mag model, this prevented me from using an M4 since the follower would ride into the bolt ways. The M5 was my only solution and i learned that the m5 wouldnt fit deep enough into the stock for the bolt to pick up and feed rounds into the chamber succesfully.I noticed that the mag with rounds loaded was too low away from the action. The fix was to mill down the rear badger pillar and the stock enough for the mag properly fit and feed the rounds.
I advise to install the pillars and take measurents to insure proper feeding with the M5 badger.Good luck on your project.

Re: badger bottom metal question

This may help some others when dealing with oddball stocks and Badger M5.

I've had a few that where deeper in the belly than ideal and needed the bottom metal lower to look right. We are talking only .050 to 5/64 at most. I've written a program to make extended mag catch latches and tune the length to suit. Pain in the ass to have to redo this along with the pillars, but it gets it done.

Re: badger bottom metal question

i have an A1-3 i ordered with pillars inlet for the M5, and i use both the M4 and M5 bottom metal in it and have no issue with either. there is the small gap along the sides of the M4, but it still works fine.
