barrel contour recomendations

im in the researce stage of my first build. it will be a 260 with a lawton 7000 action. it will be used for hunting and target out to 600 yds. i decided on the 260 since my 1000 yd rig is currently 260 so i arleady have some reloading supplies.

my question is what contour barrel do i need. im leaning towards a 26 inch barrel since the primary purpose will be hunting. im thinking krieger #7 light target barrel. that would wiegh 5.5 lbs if im reading correctly. with a 1-10 twist. i plan setting the gun up for laupa 100 gr senars. obviously i wont know thats what the gun will like but thats my goal.

any opinions on the barrel would be appriciated

I don't do a lot of hunting anymore, but all of my barrels are Remington Varmint or Medium Palma contours. It certainly helps when shooting with a sling.

I went with a Krieger #7 contour for my latest build too as I wanted something lighter than my normal heavy barrels.

Was going to go with the #15 standard Palma but I wanted to get fluting and it would have been a waste with how short I wanted my barrel (22") as only about 8" would have been fluted.

Anyhow, for a hunting/target rig it should be a fine choice, although you may consider chopping a few inches off a 26" barrel. Would be lighter as well as easier to maneuver through the woods on a hunt. Just MHO

As a plus, Krieger had my barrel delivered to me within a month and a half after I placed my order in December which was great.

Sounds like a heavy barrel contour for hunting, at least the kind where you have to walk anywhere. I use a light palma for hunting and comps: comes in about 1.5lbs lighter than what you are looking at.

Im using the #5 bull sporter fluted its alot like the light palma, almost identical in fact (a hair heavier). If you already have a target 260 you should do a light contour 22" or 20" barrel for weight and wieldy. A 100gr bullet will scream out of those barrel lengths and 600yds won't be a problem.

Remember its a tool. You have a long range tool, now your building a mid range tool. You can get away with murder at 600yds. The #5 fluted bull sporter at 22" will weigh around 3lbs, think about it. Its the contour Mcmillan is using on their new Hunter/Tactical rifle. It weighs 7lbs and the accuracy testing in the article was around 1/2moa with factory ammo. With handloads he had a 5 shot group that i believe was .217" at 100yds.

you make a good point. i do already have a long range gun and am trying to make a mid range gun, and shouldn't need a lng barrel. with the gun im thinking of i should be roughly 3000 fps with a 22 inch barrel wich is fast enough for 600 yds. thanks for the opinion

+1 on a shorter barrel for a handy set up. With a light contour it will also have less whip.

Sendero or med Palma would be my choice
