I read the "Ring Height Info - How to measure correctly" thread tacked at the top, but I have no experience mounting scopes and wanted to confirm my findings before I order rings. I'm mounting a Vortex PST 4-16x50 onto a Rem. 5R using a Badger 20 MOA base, Butler Creek caps, and wanting to use Badger standard rings. In the thread, Glen Seekins states that:
"50mm obj - low rings on < 5 contour
Medium rings > #5 and up (strait barrel get med high)"
I guess the real issue is that I have no idea what profile my 5R barrel is or what a #5 contour is. Is a stock 5R milspec barrel + or - a #5 contour?
The scope is on a UPS truck as we speak, so I can't physically measure anything. Based on some calculations using measurements from vortex's and Badger's sites for standard rings, it looks like I'll have 0.2" spacing before Butler caps. Is 0.2" spacing with standard rings sufficient to avoid contact during firing .308?
