Okay guys I am getting pretty excited now cause I just purchased my new hs precision stock for my model 700. I was curious what you guys think about barrel contours. The stock is designed for a milspec 5r barrel. Is this an m24 contour? Also, can you guys tell me what is so special about an m24 contour or is there really any difference?

Re: Barrel Contours

Ask guys what contour they like and just as important, why? Because their reason depends on what kind of shooting they're doing.
Many are too heavy for the purpose. Palma is made for Palma for example. Varmint implies just that. The thing I don't like about thick barrels is they take longer to cool. I like a Tubb or Sendero contour for tactical competitions.
Lilja writes some helpful things about barrels and others do as well.

Re: Barrel Contours

Most of the tubes you see on "tactical" rifles are entirely too thick. I absolutely love it when a match director throws in an "offhand" stage. It's just a kick to see guys try to hit a 200 yard target standing with a 30" bull barrel.

I mainly shoot regular Remington Varmint/Sendero profile. My AE has a pretty thick profile to it, but that is because it's how it comes out of the box. When I need or order a new barrel for it, I will probably spec. a thinner profile. Portability is more important to me than benchrest accuracy.

Take it for what it's worth. Just know that I shoot a bolt gun like it's a semi-auto.

Re: Barrel Contours

Performance-wise, you can shoot more before a heavy barrel gets too hot to touch.

For me, assuming a 'practical' (not a lightweight) barrel and a non-magnum chambering, the important thing is whether the rifle balances properly. The medium Palma contour on the AE is almost ideal for a heavy tactical rifle in an AICS. Other heavy contours that I like for tactical comps are MTU in a 22" and Heavy Palma in a 25".

Re: Barrel Contours

Thats funny cause the barrel that I am most likely going to buy is the m24 contour 5r barrel from mike rock. The only reason I am doing this is because I have no idea what I am doing and this is the only thing that makes sense. I am actually thinking about ordering the barrel and storing it in my closet till I get the money to give the stuff to the gun smith and say here ya go.

Wolfman speaks the truth! My last two barrels have been Meduum Palma contour. Also, carrying a heavy pig through the Allegheny Mountains tough me an important lesson.

Good luck

Re: Barrel Contours

Not that I would recommend it, but I had to try it one day. I ran about 75 rounds through a heavy contour barrel like a M24 and it was holding groups as good at rounds 70-75 as it was at 1-5. Not saying that the varmint contour cannot do this, but I know the M24 can.

Re: Barrel Contours

For portability, I like the varmint/sendero/5R profile. For heavy range use I prefer a MTU or straight 1.25 or 1.35 bull barrel. I have hunted with a 26" MTU barreled rifle and it was workout!

Re: Barrel Contours

Not wanting to start an argument but look at the original Heavy barrel Winchester Model 70 a 26 inch barrel that tapered to .750 inch. Original Remington Varmint were a little heavier at .820. It seem like we went HEAVY in the last decade or so.

If you are talking an F-Class rifle to shoot 60 - 70 rounds at a match, heavy is good, no argument. And I do own two heaver barreled rifles for F-class. BUT...for portability where you are walking allot, where positions can be other than prone, shooting can be less that 20 round strings, I go with a Palma or varmint profile of approximately .820.

Also, D. Tubbs seams to get his rifles to shoot straight without using truck axles.........LOL

Good luck

Jerry
