When it come to barrel countors how thick is too thick I hawe a kriger #7 now that I use on ny 308 win and I was wondering shood I go with a larger countor or not will it help with accuracy. At what point do you stop going up in countor of barrel?

Re: Barrel countor

Depends on what you are using your rifle for. 1" isn't uncomon at all on a 308. This would be a little heavy for moving around though. Most varmint rifles have a taper around the .8 range. As far as what thickness just becomes weight and no benafit I wouldn't know. I know people have had great long range results with heavy target tapers. Hopefully someone else can chime in as I would like to know also.

Re: Barrel countor

I just got back from a trip to the Cody Firearms Museum in Wyoming. They had two P14 Eddystone sniper rifles from WWI. The barrels were at least 2 inches in diameter. Maybe they knew something special back then? Just a thought.

Re: Barrel countor

I have the most experience with a M40 contour and Rem. Varmint contour in .308. I don't see a lot of reason to go heavier than the M40 on a rifle that you will be walking with. I like the Varmint contour just fine though and don't feel that the contour of the barrel is the limiting factor in the accuracy of the system.

I was at a Museum in Louisville, KY looking at a firearms exhibit. Some of the "target" rifles they had in there were baffling in their mass. Barrels like telephone poles. Of course they were working with some different ammo and some different notions about things.

Re: Barrel countor

hi in F Class Open we shoot lost of calibres and not many use a barrel bigger than a no7 it is a great ballance for a long range rifle but i have also shot barrels like a rem varmint profile that are just as accurate. if this is a tacticle/hunting rifle i would not go bigger and would actualy have a smaler profile myself or have the no7 fluted to reduce some weight.

Anything from a heavy varmint up is all you need and the quality of the barrel will be more important than the actual profile.
