Barrel free float to the recoil lug?

Re: Barrel free float to the recoil lug?

Most 'real' smiths bed 1.5" or so ahead of lug, especially with anything heavier than a sporter. Takes some pressure off the rear screw IMO. Might not hurt anything with nothing in front of the lug but really easier to bed the lug properly IMO if you leave/add a pad ahead of it. I put a layer of electrical tape on each side of receiver and the barrel extending about 3/16" or just covering ejection port below stockline and not bedding tight clear to the top. Makes taking them in and out a bit easier without having to worry so much about chipping bedding material if it is real tight or especially if wood expanded some over time. Easier to clean up and also covers gas hole, ejection port and no worries about not getting lettering etc good with release agent and some epoxy getting up into it when spreading it evenly etc.

Just my .02 worth however. I have only done 100 or so over the last 25yrs so am really a rookie compared to real smiths with a shingle.

Re: Barrel free float to the recoil lug?

Another thing I do is measure the distance I want to end bedding ahead of lug and put a couple layers of masking tape in stock at that distance. Also layers on barrel depending on amount of clearance. In fact I have found that going around and around with electrical tape until desired number of wraps center barrel in channel and close to stock without influencing depth of receiver or lifting it off pillars or whatever position you want it to set at. Then you can cut along that tape line and remove what oozed ahead of it leaving a clean line on the bedding.

Another thing I use to center barrel is wraps of electrical tape on barrel right at the tip of stock. Again depending on how much clearance you have/want the pad of tape at front centers and keeps the weight of action from pushing out too much bedding, especially nice if you don't have pillars it will set on. When you remove tape after bedding you have a nice centered free floated barrel.

Hope it all makes sense. Alot easier to do than try to explain in words and sentences without being a short story.
