Howdy guys,

couldnt find on the search function or maybe I wasnt using it right, but here it goes:

I just purchased a remington take off barrel for my m700, Is the swap fairly easy?, and do any of you guys know how much something as simple as this would cost? more less ball park numbers. Could this be a Do it yourself?

Thanks in advance

Re: Barrel Installation

Swapping a barrel on a Remmy is a bit more in depth then with some others. I would certainly have it rebarreled by a competent smith. Most rebarreling jobs run $300-$400 and your looking at $550-$700 to rebarrel and true up the action.

Re: Barrel Installation

wow that is a lot more than I imagined. I thought it was more like screwing it in and checking with go/no go gauges..

I the barrel I have and will soon have are factory rems..

Re: Barrel Installation

It might screw on and head space just fine but then again it might not. If you wanted no other work done, and it won't head space you will need a lathe to take a cut on the barrel shoulder to close up the head space if it's long. If it's short you will need a reamer.

Some smiths will do this type of thing and some won't, your only option is to call a few and ask.

Re: Barrel Installation

I'd say that $300-$400 is "a little" steep, considering that the threads are already cut, and that the chamber (or barrel shoulder) will eventually need to be cut by a few hairs deep.
IIRC last time GAP took me $200 for a full install (meaning cutting the whole threads and full chamber), and Pierce Engineering $175 (full install) just a month ago. I'd say average you're looking at less than $200.
I would never buy a take out barrel for M700 though, since the percent price saved is not that high once you account the $200 for the install.
