Barrel Interchangability?

I have a Remington 700 5R. I'm planning to pick up a barrel for a SPS Tactical... Could a Gunsmith swap those Barrels?

I know that it's not the superior barrel but I'm getting a good deal and would just leave the barrel in my safe just in case I needed it.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Barrel Interchangability?

A gunsmith should have no problem doing it, but the better question would be why bother? For the amount you would spend getting the old barrel taken off and the new one set back and the chamber recut it would probably make more sense to save up some cash for a couple of months and have a nice barrel blank from one of the many great manufacturers here on the hide sitting in the safe rather than another factory barrel.

Re: Barrel Interchangability?

Why are you wanting to change barrels? Are you dissatisfied with your current barrel?

If its the desire to have a 20" like the SPS, why not just have your 5R barrel cut down and recrowned?

Re: Barrel Interchangability?

If you pick up a barrel vice, go/no go guages you could do it yourself. I must agree though, probably not worth doing. If you really want a short barrel get a new one or have your barrel cut down and re-crowned.

Re: Barrel Interchangability?

Thanks for the responses fellas.

The barrel on the 5R is already cut/crowned and threaded to 18.5 inches.

I'm just kickin around ideas and don't know anyone around here to get advice from...
