Barrel Length?

What is the best barrel length for a 30-06. Been looking at Rem 700 long Range which has 26" rem/var contour barrel. Would be used for whitetail, and paper punching out to 800yds. If I get it would like to cut barrel down,just don't know he much to take off.Thanks

Without a particular application in mind, 26 inches is abouit perfect for 30-06.
Given a particular application in mind, barrels as short as 18 inches or as long as 32 inches are appropriate.

23-24 if going long yet want to improve handling, the most I want in a hunting rifle.

Son has 30-06 with 24" barrel and it is so much better to carry in the woods than my 26" barreled 280.
