Range Report Barrel Life .300 ultra mag

Re: Barrel Life .300 ultra mag

700-1100 Which end of that depends on managing the cleaning process as the barrel ages. Below is an image of a 338 Lap Imp barrel @1173 rounds. 2" ahead of the throat in the groove. That's copper stripped off the bullets as they pass by. Not good. Managing carbon build up, heat checking and jacket fouling are the keys to performance over the life of the barrel. The next image is 6" down the barrel. No copper but heat checking and carbon. Big boomers are labor intensive.

The total bore transit life on a .308 barrel that's 24" long is somewhere around 6 seconds supposedly. I haven't done the math myself to check it, but that doesn't sound unbelievable.

The "in barrel" time of a hot 308 load is on the order of 1.2-1.4 milliseconds.
The number of rounds these barrels remain accurate is in the range of 3000-8000.
So the total accumulated barrel time will be in the range of 4-12 seconds.

Dont mean to hijack your thread. But shooting a 338 edge. I would assume it would be comperable to RUM ? Just wandering myself. And i also lever thought of bbl life in sec. It makes sense.

Re: Barrel Life .300 ultra mag

RWG, The barrel life of the edge is many rounds beyond the 300 ultramag from what I have found. I have both built back in late 1998 and shot 1000+ rounds. More erosion in the 300 ultramag by far. Of the 338-300 ultramags or edge I did 10-12 years ago that I am still aware of some have 1500 plus rounds on them and still shoot very well.

Sorry I don't have exact round counts but basically it is very hard to wear out an edge or 338-300 ultramag, whichever you care to call it, as long as you take care of it. As long as it is for hunting purposes. You can wear out any rifle shooting matches every week.
